Sower Sunday
The parable of the sower and the reception of God's word.
Bibelsk grunnlag
Jesus tells the parable of the sower who scatters seed in different types of soil (Matt 13:1-23, Mark 4:1-20, Luke 8:4-15). Some falls on the path and birds eat it, some on rocky ground where it withers quickly, some among thorns that choke it, and some in good soil where it bears fruit—thirtyfold, sixtyfold, a hundredfold. Jesus explains that the seed is God's word and the soil represents human hearts.
Betydning
The parable addresses how people receive God's word—and what hinders it from bearing fruit: indifference, shallow faith, worries, and wealth. At the same time, it is a promise: where the word takes root, it bears abundant fruit. The responsibility lies with the receiver, but the power resides in the word itself.
GT-forbindelser
Isaiah 55:10-11—God's word like rain that does not return without accomplishing what it was sent for. Psalm 126:5-6 about sowing in tears and reaping with joy. Isaiah 6:9-10 about the people who hear but do not understand—quoted by Jesus in his explanation of the parable.
Liturgisk kontekst
Green color (Ordinary Time). Placed between Epiphany and Lent. The focus on God's word makes this day a natural transition—from revelation to discipleship.
Historie
Sower Sunday is particularly important in Scandinavian Lutheran tradition. Luther placed great emphasis on the parable as a description of the effect of the word and the challenges of faith. This day has traditionally been linked to Bible distribution and mission work.
