Warning Against Offering Injured Animals
Through the prophet Malachi, the Lord of hosts rebukes the priests and the people for bringing lame and sick animals as sacrifices. He would rather have the temple doors shut than have fire lit on the altar in vain. The name of the Lord is great among the nations from where the sun rises to where it sets, where pure offerings and incense are presented. But in Israel the table of the Lord is profaned. Cursed is the deceiver who has a healthy male animal in his flock but makes a vow and sacrifices a defective one—for the Lord is a great King whose name inspires fear among the nations.
Maleachi 1,10-14
10If only one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I take no pleasure in you, says the LORD of hosts, and I will accept no offering from your hands.
מִ֤י גַם־בָּכֶם֙ וְיִסְגֹּ֣ר דְּלָתַ֔יִם וְלֹֽא־תָאִ֥ירוּ מִזְבְּחִ֖י חִנָּ֑ם אֵֽין־לִ֨י חֵ֜פֶץ בָּכֶ֗ם אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וּמִנְחָ֖ה לֹֽא־אֶרְצֶ֥ה מִיֶּדְכֶֽם׃
11For from where the sun rises to where it sets, my name is great among the nations. In every place incense and a pure offering are brought to my name, for my name is great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts.
כִּ֣י מִמִּזְרַח־שֶׁ֜מֶשׁ וְעַד־מְבוֹא֗וֹ גָּד֤וֹל שְׁמִי֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם וּבְכָל־מָק֗וֹם מֻקְטָ֥ר מֻגָּ֛שׁ לִשְׁמִ֖י וּמִנְחָ֣ה טְהוֹרָ֑ה כִּֽי־גָד֤וֹל שְׁמִי֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃
12But you profane my name by saying that the Lord's table is defiled, and its food is contemptible.
וְאַתֶּ֖ם מְחַלְּלִ֣ים אוֹת֑וֹ בֶּאֱמָרְכֶ֗ם שֻׁלְחַ֤ן אֲדֹנָי֙ מְגֹאָ֣ל ה֔וּא וְנִיב֖וֹ נִבְזֶ֥ה אָכְלֽוֹ׃
13And you say, "What a burden!" and you sniff at it in contempt, says the LORD of hosts. You bring what has been stolen, the lame and the diseased, and this you present as an offering. Should I accept that from your hands? says the LORD.
וַאֲמַרְתֶּם֩ הִנֵּ֨ה מַתְּלָאָ֜ה וְהִפַּחְתֶּ֣ם אוֹת֗וֹ אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וַהֲבֵאתֶ֣ם גָּז֗וּל וְאֶת־הַפִּסֵּ֙חַ֙ וְאֶת־הַ֣חוֹלֶ֔ה וַהֲבֵאתֶ֖ם אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֑ה הַאֶרְצֶ֥ה אוֹתָ֛הּ מִיֶּדְכֶ֖ם אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ ס
14Cursed is the cheat who has a male animal in his flock and vows to give it, but sacrifices a blemished one to the Lord. For I am a great King, says the LORD of hosts, and my name is feared among the nations.
וְאָר֣וּר נוֹכֵ֗ל וְיֵ֤שׁ בְּעֶדְרוֹ֙ זָכָ֔ר וְנֹדֵ֛ר וְזֹבֵ֥חַ מָשְׁחָ֖ת לַֽאדֹנָ֑י כִּי֩ מֶ֨לֶךְ גָּד֜וֹל אָ֗נִי אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וּשְׁמִ֖י נוֹרָ֥א בַגּוֹיִֽם׃
