Warning about the yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
While the disciples are worried because they have only one loaf of bread with them in the boat, Jesus warns them against the yeast of the Pharisees and Herod. He rebukes them for their lack of understanding and reminds them of the two miracles where he fed five thousand and four thousand people respectively.
Markus 8,14-21
14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread; they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
Καὶ ἐπελάθοντο λαβεῖν ἄρτους, καὶ εἰ μὴ ἕνα ἄρτον οὐκ εἶχον μεθʼ ἑαυτῶν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ.
15He warned them, "Watch out — beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod."
καὶ διεστέλλετο αὐτοῖς λέγων· Ὁρᾶτε, βλέπετε ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ τῆς ζύμης Ἡρῴδου.
16They said to one another, "It's because we have no bread."
καὶ διελογίζοντο πρὸς ⸀ἀλλήλους ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ⸀ἔχουσιν.
17Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened?
καὶ ⸀γνοὺς λέγει αὐτοῖς· Τί διαλογίζεσθε ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε; οὔπω νοεῖτε οὐδὲ συνίετε; ⸀πεπωρωμένην ἔχετε τὴν καρδίαν ὑμῶν;
18You have eyes — don't you see? You have ears — don't you hear? Don't you remember?
ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχοντες οὐ βλέπετε καὶ ὦτα ἔχοντες οὐκ ἀκούετε; καὶ οὐ μνημονεύετε
19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you gather?" "Twelve," they told him.
ὅτε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους ἔκλασα εἰς τοὺς πεντακισχιλίους, πόσους κοφίνους ⸂κλασμάτων πλήρεις⸃ ἤρατε; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· Δώδεκα.
20"And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets of pieces did you gather?" "Seven," they said.
ὅτε ⸀καὶ τοὺς ἑπτὰ εἰς τοὺς τετρακισχιλίους, πόσων σπυρίδων πληρώματα κλασμάτων ἤρατε; ⸂καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ⸃· Ἑπτά.
21And he said to them, "Do you still not understand?"
καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· ⸀Οὔπω συνίετε;
