The Temple Workforce
King Solomon conscripted forced laborers from all Israel: 30,000 men were sent to Lebanon in shifts—one month in Lebanon and two months at home—under the supervision of Adoniram. In addition, he had 70,000 carriers and 80,000 stonecutters in the hills, as well as 3,300 foremen. By the king's command, large, costly stones were quarried for the foundation of God's house, and Solomon's and Hiram's builders, together with the men from Gebal, cut the stones and prepared the timber for the temple.
1. Könige 5,27-32
27King Solomon conscripted laborers from all Israel—thirty thousand men in all.
וַיַּ֨עַל הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה מַ֖ס מִכָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיְהִ֣י הַמַּ֔ס שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף אִֽישׁ׃
28He sent them to Lebanon in shifts of ten thousand a month, so that they spent one month in Lebanon and two months at home. Adoniram was in charge of the forced labor.
וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֣ם לְבָנ֗וֹנָה עֲשֶׂ֨רֶת אֲלָפִ֤ים בַּחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ חֲלִיפ֔וֹת חֹ֚דֶשׁ יִהְי֣וּ בַלְּבָנ֔וֹן שְׁנַ֥יִם חֳדָשִׁ֖ים בְּבֵית֑וֹ וַאֲדֹנִירָ֖ם עַל־הַמַּֽס׃ ס
29Solomon also had seventy thousand men to carry loads and eighty thousand to quarry stone in the hills,
וַיְהִ֧י לִשְׁלֹמֹ֛ה שִׁבְעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף נֹשֵׂ֣א סַבָּ֑ל וּשְׁמֹנִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף חֹצֵ֥ב בָּהָֽר׃
30besides his three thousand three hundred foremen who were in charge of the project and supervised the workers.
לְ֠בַד מִשָּׂרֵ֨י הַנִצָּבִ֤ים לִשְׁלֹמֹה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֖ים וּשְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת הָרֹדִ֣ים בָּעָ֔ם הָעֹשִׂ֖ים בַּמְּלָאכָֽה׃
31At the king's command they quarried huge, costly blocks of dressed stone to lay the foundation of the temple.
וַיְצַ֣ו הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ וַיַּסִּעוּ֩ אֲבָנִ֨ים גְּדֹל֜וֹת אֲבָנִ֧ים יְקָר֛וֹת לְיַסֵּ֥ד הַבָּ֖יִת אַבְנֵ֥י גָזִֽית׃
32Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders, together with the men of Gebal, cut and shaped them, and they prepared the timber and the stone for building the temple.
וַֽיִּפְסְל֞וּ בֹּנֵ֧י שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה וּבֹנֵ֥י חִיר֖וֹם וְהַגִּבְלִ֑ים וַיָּכִ֛ינוּ הָעֵצִ֥ים וְהָאֲבָנִ֖ים לִבְנ֥וֹת הַבָּֽיִת׃ פ
