Deborah and Barak
The prophetess Deborah and the military commander Barak defeat the Canaanite army led by Sisera, who is killed by Jael. Afterwards, Deborah and Barak sing a song of victory.
Richter 4,1-5,31
1After Ehud was dead, the Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD.
2So the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-hagoyim.
3Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, for Sisera had nine hundred iron chariots, and for twenty years he had cruelly oppressed the Israelites.
4Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time.
5She used to sit under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites came up to her for judgment.
6She sent for Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, "Has not the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded you: 'Go, march to Mount Tabor and take with you ten thousand men from Naphtali and Zebulun.
7I will draw out Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army, to meet you at the Kishon River with his chariots and his troops, and I will give him into your hand.'"
8Barak said to her, "If you go with me, I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go."
9"I will surely go with you," she said, "but the honor will not be yours on the road you are taking, for the LORD will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman." So Deborah rose and went with Barak to Kedesh.
10Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh, and ten thousand men marched up behind him. Deborah went up with him as well.
11Now Heber the Kenite had separated from the other Kenites, the descendants of Hobab, the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent by the oak at Zaanannim, near Kedesh.
12When Sisera was told that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up Mount Tabor,
13he summoned all his chariots, nine hundred iron chariots, and all the troops with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim to the Kishon River.
14Then Deborah said to Barak, "Up! This is the day the LORD has given Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone out before you?" So Barak charged down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men behind him.
15And the LORD routed Sisera and all the chariots and all the army by the edge of the sword before Barak. Sisera got down from his chariot and fled on foot.
16Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth-hagoyim, and Sisera's whole army fell by the sword; not one man was left.
17Meanwhile Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.
18Jael came out to meet Sisera and said to him, "Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me. Do not be afraid." So he turned aside to her in the tent, and she covered him with a blanket.
19He said to her, "Please give me a little water to drink; I am thirsty." She opened a skin of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him again.
20"Stand at the entrance of the tent," he told her, "and if anyone comes and asks you, 'Is there a man here?' say, 'No.'"
21But Jael, Heber's wife, took a tent peg and a hammer in her hand, went quietly to him, and drove the peg through his temple into the ground while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. So he died.
22Just then Barak came by in pursuit of Sisera, and Jael went out to meet him. "Come," she said, "I will show you the man you are looking for." He went in with her, and there lay Sisera, dead, with the tent peg through his temple.
23On that day God subdued Jabin king of Canaan before the Israelites.
24And the hand of the Israelites pressed harder and harder against Jabin king of Canaan until they destroyed him.
1On that day Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang this song:
2When the leaders took the lead in Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves — bless the LORD!
3Hear this, you kings; listen, you rulers! I will sing to the LORD, I myself will sing; I will make music to the LORD, the God of Israel.
4LORD, when you went out from Seir, when you marched from the fields of Edom, the earth shook, the heavens poured, the clouds poured down water.
5The mountains melted before the LORD, even Sinai, before the LORD, the God of Israel.
6In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways lay empty, and travelers kept to the winding trails.
7Village life in Israel ceased — it ceased — until I, Deborah, arose, until I arose, a mother in Israel.
8They chose new gods; then war came to the gates. Was a shield to be seen, or a spear, among forty thousand in Israel?
9My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel, to the people who willingly offered themselves — bless the LORD!
10You who ride on white donkeys, you who sit on saddle blankets, you who walk the roads — tell of it!
11To the sound of singing at the watering places, there they recount the righteous deeds of the LORD, the righteous deeds of his villagers in Israel. Then the people of the LORD marched down to the gates.
12Awake, awake, Deborah! Awake, awake, break into song! Rise up, Barak, and lead away your captives, son of Abinoam!
13Then those who were left came down against the nobles; the people of the LORD came down for me against the mighty.
14From Ephraim they came, whose roots are in Amalek; behind you, Benjamin, with your kinsmen. From Machir the commanders came down, and from Zebulun those who bear the marshal's staff.
15The princes of Issachar were with Deborah; Issachar followed Barak, rushing into the valley at his heels. But among the clans of Reuben there was deep searching of heart.
16Why did you linger among the sheepfolds, listening to the whistling for the flocks? Among the clans of Reuben there was deep searching of heart.
17Gilead stayed beyond the Jordan. And Dan — why did he linger by the ships? Asher sat still on the seacoast and remained in his harbors.
18But Zebulun was a people who risked their lives to the death, and Naphtali too, on the heights of the field.
19Kings came and fought; then the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo — but they carried off no silver, no plunder.
20From the heavens they fought; the stars from their courses fought against Sisera.
21The river Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. March on, my soul, in strength!
22Then the hooves of the horses hammered the ground — the galloping, galloping of his stallions.
23"Curse Meroz," said the angel of the LORD, "bitterly curse its people, because they did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD against the mighty."
24Most blessed of women be Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite; most blessed of women who dwell in tents.
25He asked for water; she gave him milk. In a bowl fit for a prince she brought him curds.
26Her hand reached for the tent peg, her right hand for the workman's hammer. She struck Sisera, she crushed his head; she shattered and pierced his temple.
27At her feet he sank, he fell, he lay still. At her feet he sank, he fell; where he sank, there he fell — dead.
28Through the window Sisera's mother looked out; behind the lattice she wailed: "Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why is the clatter of his chariots delayed?"
29The wisest of her ladies answer her; she keeps repeating the words to herself:
30"Surely they are finding and dividing the spoil — a girl or two for every man, dyed cloth as spoil for Sisera, dyed cloth richly embroidered, two embroidered pieces for the neck of the plunderer."
31So may all your enemies perish, O LORD! But may those who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength. And the land had rest for forty years.
