The Good Samaritan
A lawyer asks Jesus who his neighbor is. Jesus tells of a man who was attacked by robbers on the way from Jerusalem to Jericho. A priest and a Levite passed by on the other side, but a Samaritan felt compassion, bound up his wounds, brought him to an inn, and paid for his care. Jesus asks who was the victim's neighbor and urges the lawyer to do likewise.
Lukas 10,25-37
25Then an expert in the law stood up to test him. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Καὶ ἰδοὺ νομικός τις ἀνέστη ἐκπειράζων ⸀αὐτὸν λέγων· Διδάσκαλε, τί ποιήσας ζωὴν αἰώνιον κληρονομήσω;
26Jesus said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?"
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν· Ἐν τῷ νόμῳ τί γέγραπται; πῶς ἀναγινώσκεις;
27He answered, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."
ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν· Ἀγαπήσεις κύριον τὸν θεόν σου ἐξ ὅλης ⸀τῆς καρδίας σου καὶ ⸂ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ψυχῇ⸃ σου καὶ ⸂ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ἰσχύϊ⸃ σου καὶ ⸂ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ διανοίᾳ⸃ σου, καὶ τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν.
28"You have answered correctly," Jesus said. "Do this and you will live."
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ· Ὀρθῶς ἀπεκρίθης· τοῦτο ποίει καὶ ζήσῃ.
29But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
Ὁ δὲ θέλων ⸀δικαιῶσαι ἑαυτὸν εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν· Καὶ τίς ἐστίν μου πλησίον;
30Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell among robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.
ὑπολαβὼν ⸀δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Ἄνθρωπός τις κατέβαινεν ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλὴμ εἰς Ἰεριχὼ καὶ λῃσταῖς περιέπεσεν, οἳ καὶ ἐκδύσαντες αὐτὸν καὶ πληγὰς ἐπιθέντες ἀπῆλθον ἀφέντες ⸀ἡμιθανῆ.
31By chance a priest was going down that same road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
κατὰ συγκυρίαν δὲ ἱερεύς τις κατέβαινεν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἐκείνῃ, καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὸν ἀντιπαρῆλθεν·
32So too a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ ⸀Λευίτης κατὰ τὸν τόπον ἐλθὼν καὶ ἰδὼν ἀντιπαρῆλθεν.
33But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came to where the man was, and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion.
Σαμαρίτης δέ τις ὁδεύων ἦλθεν κατʼ αὐτὸν καὶ ⸀ἰδὼν ἐσπλαγχνίσθη,
34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
καὶ προσελθὼν κατέδησεν τὰ τραύματα αὐτοῦ ἐπιχέων ἔλαιον καὶ οἶνον, ἐπιβιβάσας δὲ αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸ ἴδιον κτῆνος ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν εἰς πανδοχεῖον καὶ ἐπεμελήθη αὐτοῦ.
35The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Take care of him,' he said, 'and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.'
καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν ⸀αὔριον ἐκβαλὼν ⸂δύο δηνάρια ἔδωκεν⸃ τῷ πανδοχεῖ καὶ ⸀εἶπεν· Ἐπιμελήθητι αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὅ τι ἂν προσδαπανήσῃς ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ ἐπανέρχεσθαί με ἀποδώσω σοι.
36Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?"
⸀τίς τούτων τῶν τριῶν πλησίον δοκεῖ σοι γεγονέναι τοῦ ἐμπεσόντος εἰς τοὺς λῃστάς;
37He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Then Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Ὁ ποιήσας τὸ ἔλεος μετʼ αὐτοῦ. εἶπεν ⸀δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Πορεύου καὶ σὺ ποίει ὁμοίως.
Matthäus 22,34-40
34When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together,
Οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἐφίμωσεν τοὺς Σαδδουκαίους συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό.
35and one of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν νομικὸς πειράζων ⸀αὐτόν·
36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?"
Διδάσκαλε, ποία ἐντολὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ νόμῳ;
37He answered, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'
ὁ ⸀δὲ ἔφη αὐτῷ· Ἀγαπήσεις κύριον τὸν θεόν σου ἐν ὅλῃ ⸀τῇ καρδίᾳ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ ⸁τῇ ψυχῇ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ διανοίᾳ σου·
38This is the great and first commandment.
αὕτη ἐστὶν ⸂ἡ μεγάλη καὶ πρώτη⸃ ἐντολή.
39And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'
Δευτέρα ⸀δὲ ὁμοία ⸀αὐτῇ· Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν.
40On these two commandments hang the whole law and the prophets."
ἐν ταύταις ταῖς δυσὶν ἐντολαῖς ὅλος ὁ νόμος ⸂κρέμαται καὶ οἱ προφῆται⸃.
Markus 12,28-34
28One of the scribes came up and heard them debating. Seeing that Jesus had answered them well, he asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?"
Καὶ προσελθὼν εἷς τῶν γραμματέων ἀκούσας αὐτῶν συζητούντων, ⸀ἰδὼν ὅτι καλῶς ⸂ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς⸃, ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτόν· Ποία ἐστὶν ⸂ἐντολὴ πρώτη πάντων⸃;
29Jesus answered, "The most important is this: 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one,
⸂ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς⸃ ὅτι Πρώτη ⸀ἐστίν· Ἄκουε, Ἰσραήλ, κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν κύριος εἷς ἐστιν,
30and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'
καὶ ἀγαπήσεις κύριον τὸν θεόν σου ἐξ ὅλης ⸀τῆς καρδίας σου καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ψυχῆς σου καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς διανοίας σου καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ἰσχύος ⸀σου.
31The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."
⸀δευτέρα αὕτη· Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν. μείζων τούτων ἄλλη ἐντολὴ οὐκ ἔστιν.
32The scribe said to him, "Well said, Teacher. You are right in saying that he is one and that there is no other besides him,
⸀καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ γραμματεύς· Καλῶς, διδάσκαλε, ἐπʼ ἀληθείας εἶπες ὅτι εἷς ἐστιν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἄλλος πλὴν αὐτοῦ·
33and that to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is worth far more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
καὶ τὸ ἀγαπᾶν αὐτὸν ἐξ ὅλης ⸀τῆς καρδίας καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ⸀συνέσεως καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ἰσχύος καὶ τὸ ἀγαπᾶν τὸν πλησίον ὡς ἑαυτὸν ⸀περισσότερόν ἐστιν πάντων τῶν ὁλοκαυτωμάτων καὶ θυσιῶν.
34When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And after that no one dared to question him any further.
καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἰδὼν ⸀αὐτὸν ὅτι νουνεχῶς ἀπεκρίθη εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Οὐ μακρὰν εἶ ἀπὸ τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ θεοῦ. καὶ οὐδεὶς οὐκέτι ἐτόλμα αὐτὸν ἐπερωτῆσαι.
