The Judgment on Edom and the Seir Mountains
The word of the Lord came to Ezekiel with a prophecy against Mount Seir and Edom. Because of their eternal hostility toward Israel, for handing over the Israelites to the sword in times of disaster, and for their boastful claims to take possession of the land of Israel and Judah, the Lord announces judgment. The land shall become an everlasting desolation; its cities will lie in ruins, the mountains filled with the slain, and no one shall dwell there anymore. Just as Edom rejoiced over Israel's destruction, so it too shall be laid waste, that they may know that I am the Lord.
Hesekiel 35,1-15
1The word of the LORD came to me:
וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃
2Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it.
בֶּן־אָדָ֕ם שִׂ֥ים פָּנֶ֖יךָ עַל־הַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֑יר וְהִנָּבֵ֖א עָלָֽיו׃
3Say to it: This is what the Lord GOD says: I am against you, Mount Seir. I will stretch out my hand against you and make you a desolate waste.
וְאָמַ֣רְתָּ לּ֗וֹ כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה הִנְנִ֥י אֵלֶ֖יךָ הַר־שֵׂעִ֑יר וְנָטִ֤יתִי יָדִי֙ עָלֶ֔יךָ וּנְתַתִּ֖יךָ שְׁמָמָ֥ה וּמְשַׁמָּֽה׃
4I will turn your cities into ruins, and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
עָרֶ֙יךָ֙ חָרְבָּ֣ה אָשִׂ֔ים וְאַתָּ֖ה שְׁמָמָ֣ה תִֽהְיֶ֑ה וְיָדַעְתָּ֖ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃
5Because you harbored a hatred that never ends and handed the Israelites over to the sword in the time of their disaster, at the time of their final punishment,
יַ֗עַן הֱי֤וֹת לְךָ֙ אֵיבַ֣ת עוֹלָ֔ם וַתַּגֵּ֥ר אֶת־בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עַל־יְדֵי־חָ֑רֶב בְּעֵ֣ת אֵידָ֔ם בְּעֵ֖ת עֲוֺ֥ן קֵֽץ׃
6therefore, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will give you over to bloodshed, and bloodshed will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you.
לָכֵ֣ן חַי־אָ֗נִי נְאֻם֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה כִּֽי־לְדָ֥ם אֶעֶשְׂךָ֖ וְדָ֣ם יִרְדֲּפֶ֑ךָ אִם־לֹ֥א דָ֛ם שָׂנֵ֖אתָ וְדָ֥ם יִרְדֲּפֶֽךָ׃
7I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and cut off from it all who come and go.
וְנָֽתַתִּי֙ אֶת־הַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֔יר לְשִֽׁמְמָ֖ה וּשְׁמָמָ֑ה וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י מִמֶּ֖נּוּ עֹבֵ֥ר וָשָֽׁב׃
8I will fill its mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines.
וּמִלֵּאתִ֥י אֶת־הָרָ֖יו חֲלָלָ֑יו גִּבְעוֹתֶ֤יךָ וְגֵאוֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ וְכָל־אֲפִיקֶ֔יךָ חַלְלֵי־חֶ֖רֶב יִפְּל֥וּ בָהֶֽם׃
9I will make you a wasteland forever; your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
שִֽׁמְמ֤וֹת עוֹלָם֙ אֶתֶּנְךָ֔ וְעָרֶ֖יךָ לֹ֣א *תישבנה **תָשֹׁ֑בְנָה וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃
10Because you said, "The two nations and the two lands will be mine, and we will take possession of them"—though the LORD was there—
יַ֣עַן אֲ֠מָרְךָ אֶת־שְׁנֵ֨י הַגּוֹיִ֜ם וְאֶת־שְׁתֵּ֧י הָאֲרָצ֛וֹת לִ֥י תִהְיֶ֖ינָה וִֽירַשְׁנ֑וּהָ וַֽיהוָ֖ה שָׁ֥ם הָיָֽה׃
11therefore, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will deal with you according to the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them, and I will make myself known among them when I judge you.
לָכֵ֣ן חַי־אָ֗נִי נְאֻם֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ וְעָשִׂ֗יתִי כְּאַפְּךָ֙ וּכְקִנְאָ֣תְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֔יתָה מִשִּׂנְאָתֶ֖יךָ בָּ֑ם וְנוֹדַ֥עְתִּי בָ֖ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶשְׁפְּטֶֽךָ׃
12Then you will know that I, the LORD, have heard every contemptuous word you spoke against the mountains of Israel, saying, "They are laid waste; they have been handed over to us to devour."
וְֽיָדַעְתָּ֮ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהוָה֒ שָׁמַ֣עְתִּי ׀ אֶת־כָּל־נָאָֽצוֹתֶ֗יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָמַ֛רְתָּ עַל־הָרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֣ר ׀ *שממה **שָׁמֵ֑מוּ לָ֥נוּ נִתְּנ֖וּ לְאָכְלָֽה׃
13You boasted against me with your mouth and multiplied your words against me. I heard it.
וַתַּגְדִּ֤ילוּ עָלַי֙ בְּפִיכֶ֔ם וְהַעְתַּרְתֶּ֥ם עָלַ֖י דִּבְרֵיכֶ֑ם אֲנִ֖י שָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃ ס
14This is what the Lord GOD says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.
כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה כִּשְׂמֹ֙חַ֙ כָּל־הָאָ֔רֶץ שְׁמָמָ֖ה אֶעֱשֶׂה־לָּֽךְ׃
15Just as you rejoiced when the inheritance of the house of Israel was laid waste, so I will do to you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, you and all Edom, every bit of it. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
כְּשִׂמְחָ֨תְךָ֜ לְנַחְלַ֧ת בֵּֽית־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל עַ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־שָׁמֵ֖מָה כֵּ֣ן אֶעֱשֶׂה־לָּ֑ךְ שְׁמָמָ֨ה תִֽהְיֶ֤ה הַר־שֵׂעִיר֙ וְכָל־אֱד֣וֹם כֻּלָּ֔הּ וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ פ
