The Judgment on Jehoiakim
Jeremiah condemns King Jehoiakim for building his palace through injustice, exploiting workers without pay, and seeking personal gain through oppression and bloodshed. The prophet predicts that he will be buried like a donkey, dragged away, and cast outside the gates of Jerusalem Jeremiah 22:13-19.
Jeremia 22,13-19
13Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness and his upper rooms by injustice, who makes his neighbor work for nothing and does not pay him his wages,
14who says, "I will build myself a spacious house with airy upper rooms," who cuts out windows for it, panels it with cedar, and paints it red with vermilion.
15Do you think you are a king because you compete in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink, and also do justice and righteousness? Then all went well for him.
16He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and it went well for him. Is that not what it means to know me? declares the LORD.
17But your eyes and your heart are set on nothing but your own gain—on shedding innocent blood, on oppression and violence.
18Therefore this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah: They will not mourn for him, crying, "Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!" They will not mourn for him, crying, "Alas, my lord! Alas, his majesty!"
19He will have the burial of a donkey—dragged away and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
