Eliphaz's First Speech and Nightly Vision
Eliphaz from Teman speaks up and reminds Job how he once guided and strengthened others, but now collapses under his own trial. He claims that the innocent do not perish, while those who sow evil reap disaster, illustrated by the fate of the lion. Then he recounts a frightening nighttime vision in which a spirit glided past his face and a voice asked whether a human can be righteous before God—for even angels He finds faulty, how much more those who dwell in houses of clay.
Hiob 4,1-21
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:
2If someone ventures a word with you, will you be weary of it? Yet who can hold back from speaking?
3Think how you have instructed many, how you strengthened failing hands.
4Your words held up the one who stumbled; you braced the buckling knees.
5But now trouble comes to you, and you are worn out; it strikes you, and you are dismayed.
6Is not your reverence your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope?
7Consider now: who ever perished being innocent? Where were the upright ever destroyed?
8As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap it themselves.
9By the breath of God they perish; by the blast of his anger they are consumed.
10The lion roars, the fierce lion growls, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken.
11The old lion dies for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12A word was brought to me in secret; my ear caught a whisper of it.
13Amid troubling thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on people,
14dread and trembling came over me, and terror filled all my bones.
15A spirit glided past my face, and the hair of my flesh stood on end.
16It stood still, but I could not recognize its appearance; a form was before my eyes. There was silence, and then I heard a voice:
17"Can a mortal be righteous before God? Can anyone be pure before his Maker?
18If he puts no trust in his servants and charges his angels with error,
19how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed like a moth!
20Between morning and evening they are shattered; unnoticed, they perish forever.
21Is not their tent cord pulled up within them? They die, and not with wisdom.
