Das Leben Jesu

The Widow's Mites

Jesus sits directly opposite the temple treasury and watches how people put money into it. Many rich people give large amounts. Then a poor widow comes and puts in two small coins. Jesus calls his disciples to him and says: 'Truly, I tell you: This poor widow has given more than all the others who put money into the temple treasury. For they all gave out of their surplus, but she gave out of her poverty—everything she had, all she had to live on.'

Markus 12,41-44

41Jesus sat down opposite the temple treasury and watched the crowd dropping their coins into it. Many rich people put in large amounts.
42Then a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.* *The Greek says two lepta, the smallest coins in circulation, together equal to one quadrans, a Roman coin of very little value.
43He called his disciples to him and said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all the others who gave to the treasury.
44For they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in everything she owned—all she had to live on.

Lukas 21,1-4

1Looking up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury.
2He also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins,
3and he said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.
4For they all gave their gifts out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."
