Enemies of the Cross and Our Heavenly Citizenship
Paul warns with tears against enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction and whose minds are set on earthly things. He reminds us that our citizenship is in heaven, where we await the Savior Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly bodies to be like his glorious body.
Philipper 3,18-21
18For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ, as I have often told you, and now I tell you again with tears.
πολλοὶ γὰρ περιπατοῦσιν οὓς πολλάκις ἔλεγον ὑμῖν, νῦν δὲ καὶ κλαίων λέγω, τοὺς ἐχθροὺς τοῦ σταυροῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ,
19Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things.
ὧν τὸ τέλος ἀπώλεια, ὧν ὁ θεὸς ἡ κοιλία καὶ ἡ δόξα ἐν τῇ αἰσχύνῃ αὐτῶν, οἱ τὰ ἐπίγεια φρονοῦντες.
20But our citizenship is in heaven, and from there we eagerly await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
ἡμῶν γὰρ τὸ πολίτευμα ἐν οὐρανοῖς ὑπάρχει, ἐξ οὗ καὶ σωτῆρα ἀπεκδεχόμεθα κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν,
21who will transform our lowly bodies to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control.
ὃς μετασχηματίσει τὸ σῶμα τῆς ταπεινώσεως ⸀ἡμῶν σύμμορφον τῷ σώματι τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ κατὰ τὴν ἐνέργειαν τοῦ δύνασθαι αὐτὸν καὶ ὑποτάξαι ⸀αὑτῷ τὰ πάντα.
