Jesus in Gethsemane
Jesus prays in anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane: 'Let this cup pass from me.' Judas betrays him with a kiss, and Jesus is arrested.
Matthäus 26,36-56
36Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to the disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
Τότε ἔρχεται μετʼ αὐτῶν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς χωρίον λεγόμενον Γεθσημανί, καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς· Καθίσατε αὐτοῦ ἕως οὗ ἀπελθὼν ⸂ἐκεῖ προσεύξωμαι⸃.
37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him, and he began to be grieved and distressed.
καὶ παραλαβὼν τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τοὺς δύο υἱοὺς Ζεβεδαίου ἤρξατο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν.
38Then he said to them, "My soul is crushed with sorrow, to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."
τότε λέγει ⸀αὐτοῖς· Περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου· μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε μετʼ ἐμοῦ.
39Going a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
καὶ ⸀προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ προσευχόμενος καὶ λέγων· Πάτερ μου, εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν, παρελθάτω ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο· πλὴν οὐχ ὡς ἐγὼ θέλω ἀλλʼ ὡς σύ.
40Then he came back to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "So you could not keep watch with me for even one hour?
καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ· Οὕτως οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι μετʼ ἐμοῦ;
41Keep watch and pray that you may not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε, ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν· τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον ἡ δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής.
42Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done."
πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο λέγων· Πάτερ μου, εἰ οὐ δύναται ⸀τοῦτο ⸀παρελθεῖν ἐὰν μὴ αὐτὸ πίω, γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου.
43And he came back again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
καὶ ἐλθὼν ⸂πάλιν εὗρεν αὐτοὺς⸃ καθεύδοντας, ἦσαν γὰρ αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ βεβαρημένοι.
44So he left them and went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same words.
καὶ ἀφεὶς αὐτοὺς ⸂πάλιν ἀπελθὼν⸃ προσηύξατο ἐκ τρίτου τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπὼν ⸀πάλιν.
45Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
τότε ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς ⸀μαθητὰς καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Καθεύδετε ⸀τὸ λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε· ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ἡ ὥρα καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς χεῖρας ἁμαρτωλῶν.
46Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is here."
ἐγείρεσθε ἄγωμεν· ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ὁ παραδιδούς με.
47While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, and with him a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
Καὶ ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα ἦλθεν καὶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ ὄχλος πολὺς μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων ἀπὸ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων τοῦ λαοῦ.
48The betrayer had given them a sign: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him."
ὁ δὲ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς σημεῖον λέγων· Ὃν ἂν φιλήσω αὐτός ἐστιν· κρατήσατε αὐτόν.
49He went straight up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.
καὶ εὐθέως προσελθὼν τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἶπεν· Χαῖρε, ῥαββί· καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν.
50Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you came for." Then they came forward, laid hands on Jesus, and arrested him.
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἑταῖρε, ἐφʼ ⸀ὃ πάρει. τότε προσελθόντες ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐκράτησαν αὐτόν.
51Suddenly one of those with Jesus reached out, drew his sword, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
καὶ ἰδοὺ εἷς τῶν μετὰ Ἰησοῦ ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἀπέσπασεν τὴν μάχαιραν αὐτοῦ καὶ πατάξας τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ ἀρχιερέως ἀφεῖλεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτίον.
52Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in its place, for all who take up the sword will perish by the sword.
τότε λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἀπόστρεψον ⸂τὴν μάχαιράν σου⸃ εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτῆς, πάντες γὰρ οἱ λαβόντες μάχαιραν ἐν μαχαίρῃ ⸀ἀπολοῦνται·
53Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he would at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?
ἢ δοκεῖς ὅτι οὐ ⸀δύναμαι παρακαλέσαι τὸν πατέρα μου, καὶ παραστήσει μοι ⸂ἄρτι πλείω⸃ δώδεκα λεγιῶνας ἀγγέλων;
54But then how would the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen this way?"
πῶς οὖν πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ ὅτι οὕτως δεῖ γενέσθαι;
55At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to capture me as though I were a robber? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple, and you did not arrest me.
ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοῖς ὄχλοις· Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν με; καθʼ ⸀ἡμέραν ⸂ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐκαθεζόμην διδάσκων⸃ καὶ οὐκ ἐκρατήσατέ με.
56But all this has happened so that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
τοῦτο δὲ ὅλον γέγονεν ἵνα πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ τῶν προφητῶν. τότε οἱ μαθηταὶ πάντες ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἔφυγον.
Markus 14,32-52
32They came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."
Καὶ ἔρχονται εἰς χωρίον οὗ τὸ ὄνομα Γεθσημανί, καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ· Καθίσατε ὧδε ἕως προσεύξωμαι.
33He took Peter, James, and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.
καὶ παραλαμβάνει τὸν Πέτρον καὶ ⸂Ἰάκωβον καὶ⸃ Ἰωάννην μετʼ ⸀αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἤρξατο ἐκθαμβεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν,
34He said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow, to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch."
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου· μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε.
35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
καὶ ⸂προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπιπτεν⸃ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, καὶ προσηύχετο ἵνα εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν παρέλθῃ ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ ἡ ὥρα,
36"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want."
καὶ ἔλεγεν· Αββα ὁ πατήρ, πάντα δυνατά σοι· παρένεγκε τὸ ποτήριον ⸂τοῦτο ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ⸃· ἀλλʼ οὐ τί ἐγὼ θέλω ἀλλὰ τί σύ.
37Then he came back and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Couldn't you keep watch for one hour?
καὶ ἔρχεται καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ· Σίμων, καθεύδεις; οὐκ ἴσχυσας μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι;
38Watch and pray that you may not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε, ἵνα μὴ ⸀ἔλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν· τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον ἡ δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής.
39Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.
καὶ πάλιν ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπών.
40When he came back, he found them sleeping again, because their eyes were heavy. And they did not know what to say to him.
καὶ ⸂πάλιν ἐλθὼν εὗρεν αὐτοὺς⸃ καθεύδοντας, ἦσαν γὰρ ⸂αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ⸃ ⸀καταβαρυνόμενοι, καὶ οὐκ ᾔδεισαν τί ⸂ἀποκριθῶσιν αὐτῷ⸃.
41He came a third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
καὶ ἔρχεται τὸ τρίτον καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Καθεύδετε ⸀τὸ λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε· ἀπέχει· ἦλθεν ἡ ὥρα, ἰδοὺ παραδίδοται ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰς τὰς χεῖρας τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν.
42Get up, let us go. See, my betrayer is here."
ἐγείρεσθε ἄγωμεν· ἰδοὺ ὁ παραδιδούς με ἤγγικεν.
43Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, and with him a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.
Καὶ ⸀εὐθὺς ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος παραγίνεται ⸀Ἰούδας ⸀εἷς τῶν δώδεκα καὶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ ⸀ὄχλος μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων παρὰ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων.
44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him and lead him away under guard."
δεδώκει δὲ ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν σύσσημον αὐτοῖς λέγων· Ὃν ἂν φιλήσω αὐτός ἐστιν· κρατήσατε αὐτὸν καὶ ⸀ἀπάγετε ἀσφαλῶς.
45Going straight to Jesus, he said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him.
καὶ ἐλθὼν ⸀εὐθὺς προσελθὼν αὐτῷ λέγει· ⸀Ῥαββί, καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν.
46Then they laid hands on him and arrested him.
οἱ δὲ ἐπέβαλαν ⸂τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῷ⸃ καὶ ἐκράτησαν αὐτόν.
47But one of those standing nearby drew his sword and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
εἷς δέ ⸀τις τῶν παρεστηκότων σπασάμενος τὴν μάχαιραν ἔπαισεν τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ ἀφεῖλεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ⸀ὠτάριον.
48Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to capture me, as though I were a bandit?
καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν με;
49Day after day I was with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."
καθʼ ἡμέραν ἤμην πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων καὶ οὐκ ἐκρατήσατέ με· ἀλλʼ ἵνα πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαί.
50Then everyone deserted him and fled.
καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ⸂ἔφυγον πάντες⸃.
51A young man, wearing nothing but a linen cloth, was following him. When they seized him,
Καὶ ⸂νεανίσκος τις⸃ ⸀συνηκολούθει αὐτῷ περιβεβλημένος σινδόνα ἐπὶ γυμνοῦ, καὶ κρατοῦσιν ⸀αὐτόν,
52he left the cloth behind and fled naked.
ὁ δὲ καταλιπὼν τὴν σινδόνα γυμνὸς ⸀ἔφυγεν.
Lukas 22,39-53
39Then he went out and made his way, as usual, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.
Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐπορεύθη κατὰ τὸ ἔθος εἰς τὸ Ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν· ἠκολούθησαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ ⸀μαθηταί.
40When he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."
γενόμενος δὲ ἐπὶ τοῦ τόπου εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Προσεύχεσθε μὴ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς πειρασμόν.
41Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed,
καὶ αὐτὸς ἀπεσπάσθη ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ὡσεὶ λίθου βολήν, καὶ θεὶς τὰ γόνατα προσηύχετο
42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me. Yet not my will, but yours be done."
λέγων· Πάτερ, εἰ βούλει ⸀παρένεγκε ⸂τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον⸃ ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ· πλὴν μὴ τὸ θέλημά μου ἀλλὰ τὸ σὸν ⸀γινέσθω.
43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
⸂ὤφθη δὲ αὐτῷ ἄγγελος ⸀ἀπʼ οὐρανοῦ ἐνισχύων αὐτόν.
44And in his anguish he prayed still more earnestly, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.
καὶ γενόμενος ἐν ἀγωνίᾳ ἐκτενέστερον προσηύχετο· ⸄καὶ ἐγένετο⸅ ὁ ἱδρὼς αὐτοῦ ὡσεὶ θρόμβοι αἵματος καταβαίνοντες ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.⸃
45When he rose from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them asleep, worn out by grief.
καὶ ἀναστὰς ἀπὸ τῆς προσευχῆς ἐλθὼν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς εὗρεν ⸂κοιμωμένους αὐτοὺς⸃ ἀπὸ τῆς λύπης,
46"Why are you sleeping?" he said to them. "Get up and pray, so that you will not fall into temptation."
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Τί καθεύδετε; ἀναστάντες προσεύχεσθε, ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν.
47While he was still speaking, a crowd arrived, and the man called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He came up to Jesus to kiss him,
⸀Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ ὄχλος, καὶ ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα προήρχετο αὐτούς, καὶ ἤγγισεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ φιλῆσαι αὐτόν.
48but Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
⸂Ἰησοῦς δὲ⸃ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἰούδα, φιλήματι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδως;
49When those around him saw what was coming, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"
ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ περὶ αὐτὸν τὸ ἐσόμενον ⸀εἶπαν· Κύριε, εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρῃ;
50And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.
καὶ ἐπάταξεν εἷς τις ἐξ αὐτῶν ⸂τοῦ ἀρχιερέως τὸν δοῦλον⸃ καὶ ἀφεῖλεν ⸂τὸ οὖς αὐτοῦ⸃ τὸ δεξιόν.
51But Jesus answered, "Stop! No more of this." And he touched the man's ear and healed him.
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Ἐᾶτε ἕως τούτου· καὶ ἁψάμενος τοῦ ⸀ὠτίου ἰάσατο αὐτόν.
52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the temple officers, and the elders who had come against him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a bandit?
εἶπεν ⸀δὲ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς παραγενομένους ἐπʼ αὐτὸν ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ στρατηγοὺς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ πρεσβυτέρους· Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ⸀ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων;
53Day after day I was with you in the temple, and you never laid a hand on me. But this is your hour — and the power of darkness."
καθʼ ἡμέραν ὄντος μου μεθʼ ὑμῶν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οὐκ ἐξετείνατε τὰς χεῖρας ἐπʼ ἐμέ· ἀλλʼ αὕτη ⸂ἐστὶν ὑμῶν⸃ ἡ ὥρα καὶ ἡ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους.
Johannes 18,1-12
1When Jesus had said all this, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
Ταῦτα ⸀εἰπὼν Ἰησοῦς ἐξῆλθεν σὺν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ πέραν τοῦ χειμάρρου ⸀τοῦ Κεδρὼν ὅπου ἦν κῆπος, εἰς ὃν εἰσῆλθεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ.
2Judas, who was betraying him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
ᾔδει δὲ καὶ Ἰούδας ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν τὸν τόπον, ὅτι πολλάκις ⸀συνήχθη Ἰησοῦς ἐκεῖ μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ.
3So Judas came there with a detachment of soldiers and with officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.
ὁ οὖν Ἰούδας λαβὼν τὴν σπεῖραν καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ ⸂ἐκ τῶν⸃ Φαρισαίων ὑπηρέτας ἔρχεται ἐκεῖ μετὰ φανῶν καὶ λαμπάδων καὶ ὅπλων.
4Jesus, knowing everything that was coming upon him, went out and asked them, "Who are you looking for?"
Ἰησοῦς ⸀οὖν εἰδὼς πάντα τὰ ἐρχόμενα ἐπʼ αὐτὸν ⸂ἐξῆλθεν, καὶ λέγει⸃ αὐτοῖς· Τίνα ζητεῖτε;
5"Jesus of Nazareth," they answered. Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who was betraying him, was standing there with them.
ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ· Ἰησοῦν τὸν Ναζωραῖον. λέγει ⸀αὐτοῖς· Ἐγώ εἰμι. εἱστήκει δὲ καὶ Ἰούδας ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν μετʼ αὐτῶν.
6When he said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.
ὡς οὖν εἶπεν ⸀αὐτοῖς· Ἐγώ εἰμι, ἀπῆλθον εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω καὶ ἔπεσαν χαμαί.
7So he asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
πάλιν οὖν ⸂ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτούς⸃· Τίνα ζητεῖτε; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· Ἰησοῦν τὸν Ναζωραῖον.
8Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go."
ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Εἶπον ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι· εἰ οὖν ἐμὲ ζητεῖτε, ἄφετε τούτους ὑπάγειν·
9This was to fulfill the word he had spoken: "Of those you gave me, I have not lost one."
ἵνα πληρωθῇ ὁ λόγος ὃν εἶπεν ὅτι Οὓς δέδωκάς μοι οὐκ ἀπώλεσα ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐδένα.
10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
Σίμων οὖν Πέτρος ἔχων μάχαιραν εἵλκυσεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἔπαισεν τὸν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως δοῦλον καὶ ἀπέκοψεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ⸀ὠτάριον τὸ δεξιόν. ἦν δὲ ὄνομα τῷ δούλῳ Μάλχος.
11So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back in its sheath. Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"
εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ Πέτρῳ· Βάλε τὴν ⸀μάχαιραν εἰς τὴν θήκην· τὸ ποτήριον ὃ δέδωκέν μοι ὁ πατὴρ οὐ μὴ πίω αὐτό;
12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officers arrested Jesus and bound him.
Ἡ οὖν σπεῖρα καὶ ὁ χιλίαρχος καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται τῶν Ἰουδαίων συνέλαβον τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔδησαν αὐτὸν
Matthäus 26,36-46
36Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to the disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
Τότε ἔρχεται μετʼ αὐτῶν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς χωρίον λεγόμενον Γεθσημανί, καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς· Καθίσατε αὐτοῦ ἕως οὗ ἀπελθὼν ⸂ἐκεῖ προσεύξωμαι⸃.
37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him, and he began to be grieved and distressed.
καὶ παραλαβὼν τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τοὺς δύο υἱοὺς Ζεβεδαίου ἤρξατο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν.
38Then he said to them, "My soul is crushed with sorrow, to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."
τότε λέγει ⸀αὐτοῖς· Περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου· μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε μετʼ ἐμοῦ.
39Going a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
καὶ ⸀προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ προσευχόμενος καὶ λέγων· Πάτερ μου, εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν, παρελθάτω ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο· πλὴν οὐχ ὡς ἐγὼ θέλω ἀλλʼ ὡς σύ.
40Then he came back to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "So you could not keep watch with me for even one hour?
καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ· Οὕτως οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι μετʼ ἐμοῦ;
41Keep watch and pray that you may not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε, ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν· τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον ἡ δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής.
42Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done."
πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο λέγων· Πάτερ μου, εἰ οὐ δύναται ⸀τοῦτο ⸀παρελθεῖν ἐὰν μὴ αὐτὸ πίω, γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου.
43And he came back again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
καὶ ἐλθὼν ⸂πάλιν εὗρεν αὐτοὺς⸃ καθεύδοντας, ἦσαν γὰρ αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ βεβαρημένοι.
44So he left them and went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same words.
καὶ ἀφεὶς αὐτοὺς ⸂πάλιν ἀπελθὼν⸃ προσηύξατο ἐκ τρίτου τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπὼν ⸀πάλιν.
45Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
τότε ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς ⸀μαθητὰς καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Καθεύδετε ⸀τὸ λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε· ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ἡ ὥρα καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς χεῖρας ἁμαρτωλῶν.
46Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is here."
ἐγείρεσθε ἄγωμεν· ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ὁ παραδιδούς με.
Matthäus 26,47-56
47While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, and with him a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
Καὶ ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα ἦλθεν καὶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ ὄχλος πολὺς μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων ἀπὸ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων τοῦ λαοῦ.
48The betrayer had given them a sign: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him."
ὁ δὲ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς σημεῖον λέγων· Ὃν ἂν φιλήσω αὐτός ἐστιν· κρατήσατε αὐτόν.
49He went straight up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.
καὶ εὐθέως προσελθὼν τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἶπεν· Χαῖρε, ῥαββί· καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν.
50Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you came for." Then they came forward, laid hands on Jesus, and arrested him.
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἑταῖρε, ἐφʼ ⸀ὃ πάρει. τότε προσελθόντες ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐκράτησαν αὐτόν.
51Suddenly one of those with Jesus reached out, drew his sword, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
καὶ ἰδοὺ εἷς τῶν μετὰ Ἰησοῦ ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἀπέσπασεν τὴν μάχαιραν αὐτοῦ καὶ πατάξας τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ ἀρχιερέως ἀφεῖλεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτίον.
52Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in its place, for all who take up the sword will perish by the sword.
τότε λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἀπόστρεψον ⸂τὴν μάχαιράν σου⸃ εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτῆς, πάντες γὰρ οἱ λαβόντες μάχαιραν ἐν μαχαίρῃ ⸀ἀπολοῦνται·
53Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he would at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?
ἢ δοκεῖς ὅτι οὐ ⸀δύναμαι παρακαλέσαι τὸν πατέρα μου, καὶ παραστήσει μοι ⸂ἄρτι πλείω⸃ δώδεκα λεγιῶνας ἀγγέλων;
54But then how would the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen this way?"
πῶς οὖν πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ ὅτι οὕτως δεῖ γενέσθαι;
55At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to capture me as though I were a robber? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple, and you did not arrest me.
ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοῖς ὄχλοις· Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν με; καθʼ ⸀ἡμέραν ⸂ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐκαθεζόμην διδάσκων⸃ καὶ οὐκ ἐκρατήσατέ με.
56But all this has happened so that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
τοῦτο δὲ ὅλον γέγονεν ἵνα πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ τῶν προφητῶν. τότε οἱ μαθηταὶ πάντες ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἔφυγον.
