The Death and Burial of Jacob

Jacob instructs his sons to bury him in the cave of Machpelah in Canaan and dies in Egypt. Joseph has his father's body embalmed, and the Egyptians mourn for seventy days. With Pharaoh's permission, Joseph travels up with a large entourage, holds a mourning ceremony at Goren-Ha'atad, and buries Jacob in the cave that Abraham bought, before returning to Egypt.

1. Mose 49,29-50,14

29Then he gave them these instructions: "I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
30the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in the land of Canaan, the field Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site.
31There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried; there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried; and there I buried Leah.
32The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites."
33When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.
1Joseph fell upon his father's face, wept over him, and kissed him.
2Then Joseph ordered the physicians in his service to embalm his father, and the physicians embalmed Israel.
3It took forty days, for that is the full time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned him seventy days.
4When the days of mourning were over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's household, "If I have found favor in your eyes, speak to Pharaoh on my behalf and say:
5'My father made me swear an oath, saying, "I am about to die. Bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan." Now let me go up and bury my father, and then I will return.'"
6Pharaoh answered, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear."
7So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went all Pharaoh's servants, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
8along with all of Joseph's household, his brothers, and his father's household. Only their children, their flocks, and their herds were left behind in the land of Goshen.
9Chariots and horsemen went up with him as well; it was a very great company.
10When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, beyond the Jordan, they raised a great and solemn lament there, and Joseph observed seven days of mourning for his father.
11When the Canaanites who lived in the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a deep mourning for the Egyptians." That is why the place beyond the Jordan was named Abel Mizraim.[fn]
12So Jacob's sons did for him just as he had commanded them:
13they carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, the field near Mamre that Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site.
14After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
