The Basket of Summer Fruit

The Lord shows Amos a vision of a basket of summer fruit and declares that the end has come for his people Israel. The temple songs will become laments, and many corpses will lie scattered about.

Amos 8,1-3

1This is what the Lord GOD showed me: a basket of summer fruit.
2He asked, "What do you see, Amos?" I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD said to me, "The end has come for my people Israel; I will never again pass them by." [Footnote: The Hebrew word for "summer fruit" (qayits) sounds like the word for "end" (qets).]
3"On that day the songs of the palace will turn to wailing," declares the Lord GOD. "Corpses will be everywhere—flung out in silence." [Footnote: Or "the songs of the temple."]
