Paul and Silas begin the second missionary journey and meet Timothy
Paul and Barnabas disagree about taking John Mark along and part ways; Barnabas sails to Cyprus with Mark, while Paul chooses Silas. Paul travels through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches. He arrives at Derbe and Lystra, where he meets the disciple Timothy, who has a good testimony from the brothers in Lystra and Iconium. Paul takes him along on the journey after circumcising him because of the Jews in that area. The churches are strengthened in faith and grow in number day by day.

36Some days later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us go back and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are doing."
Μετὰ δέ τινας ἡμέρας εἶπεν ⸂πρὸς Βαρναβᾶν Παῦλος⸃· Ἐπιστρέψαντες δὴ ἐπισκεψώμεθα τοὺς ⸀ἀδελφοὺς κατὰ ⸂πόλιν πᾶσαν⸃ ἐν αἷς κατηγγείλαμεν τὸν λόγον τοῦ κυρίου, πῶς ἔχουσιν.
37Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, along with them,
Βαρναβᾶς δὲ ⸀ἐβούλετο συμπαραλαβεῖν ⸀καὶ τὸν Ἰωάννην τὸν καλούμενον Μᾶρκον·
38but Paul insisted that they should not take along someone who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone on with them to the work.
Παῦλος δὲ ἠξίου, τὸν ἀποστάντα ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Παμφυλίας καὶ μὴ συνελθόντα αὐτοῖς εἰς τὸ ἔργον, μὴ ⸀συμπαραλαμβάνειν τοῦτον.
39The disagreement was so sharp that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus,
ἐγένετο ⸀δὲ παροξυσμὸς ὥστε ἀποχωρισθῆναι αὐτοὺς ἀπʼ ἀλλήλων, τόν τε Βαρναβᾶν παραλαβόντα τὸν Μᾶρκον ἐκπλεῦσαι εἰς Κύπρον,
40while Paul chose Silas and set out, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord.
Παῦλος δὲ ἐπιλεξάμενος Σιλᾶν ἐξῆλθεν παραδοθεὶς τῇ χάριτι τοῦ ⸀κυρίου ὑπὸ τῶν ἀδελφῶν,
41He traveled through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
διήρχετο δὲ τὴν Συρίαν καὶ ⸀τὴν Κιλικίαν ἐπιστηρίζων τὰς ἐκκλησίας.
1Paul came also to Derbe and then to Lystra. And there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish woman, but his father was a Greek.
Κατήντησεν δὲ ⸀καὶ εἰς Δέρβην καὶ ⸀εἰς Λύστραν. καὶ ἰδοὺ μαθητής τις ἦν ἐκεῖ ὀνόματι Τιμόθεος, υἱὸς ⸀γυναικὸς Ἰουδαίας πιστῆς, πατρὸς δὲ Ἕλληνος,
2The brothers in Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him,
ὃς ἐμαρτυρεῖτο ὑπὸ τῶν ἐν Λύστροις καὶ Ἰκονίῳ ἀδελφῶν·
3and Paul wanted to take him along on the journey. So he circumcised him because of the Jews in that region, since they all knew that his father was a Greek.
τοῦτον ἠθέλησεν ὁ Παῦλος σὺν αὐτῷ ἐξελθεῖν, καὶ λαβὼν περιέτεμεν αὐτὸν διὰ τοὺς Ἰουδαίους τοὺς ὄντας ἐν τοῖς τόποις ἐκείνοις, ᾔδεισαν γὰρ ἅπαντες ⸂ὅτι Ἕλλην ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ⸃ ὑπῆρχεν.
4As they traveled from town to town, they handed on to them the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem, telling them to observe these.
ὡς δὲ διεπορεύοντο τὰς πόλεις, ⸀παρεδίδοσαν αὐτοῖς φυλάσσειν τὰ δόγματα τὰ κεκριμένα ὑπὸ τῶν ἀποστόλων ⸀καὶ πρεσβυτέρων τῶν ἐν ⸀Ἱεροσολύμοις.
5So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew in numbers day by day.
αἱ μὲν οὖν ἐκκλησίαι ἐστερεοῦντο τῇ πίστει καὶ ἐπερίσσευον τῷ ἀριθμῷ καθʼ ἡμέραν.
