The Consecration of the Trumpets and the Departure from Sinai
The Lord gives Moses instructions to make two silver trumpets for calling the assembly and signaling the camps to break camp. In the second year, the cloud lifts from the tabernacle, and the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai toward the wilderness of Paran in a fixed order, tribe by tribe. Moses asks his brother-in-law Hobab to join them as a guide, and when the ark set out, Moses said: "Rise up, Lord! May your enemies be scattered."
4. Mose 10,1-36
1The LORD said to Moses:
2"Make yourself two trumpets of silver; make them of hammered work. You shall use them to summon the congregation and to set the camps in motion.
3When both are blown, the whole congregation shall gather to you at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
4If only one is blown, then the leaders, the heads of the clans of Israel, shall gather to you.
5When you sound a blast, the camps on the east side shall set out.
6When you sound a second blast, the camps on the south side shall set out. A blast is to be sounded whenever they are to march.
7But when you call the assembly together, you shall blow a steady note, not a blast.
8The sons of Aaron, the priests, are the ones to blow the trumpets. This shall be a lasting statute for you throughout your generations.
9When you go to war in your land against an enemy who oppresses you, sound a blast on the trumpets, and you will be remembered before the LORD your God and saved from your enemies.
10On your days of gladness, at your appointed festivals, and at the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and your fellowship offerings. They will be a remembrance for you before your God. I am the LORD your God."
11In the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle of the testimony.
12Then the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai, stage by stage, and the cloud settled in the wilderness of Paran.
13This was the first time they set out at the command of the LORD through Moses.
14The standard of the camp of Judah went first, company by company, and Nahshon son of Amminadab was over its company.
15Nethanel son of Zuar was over the company of the tribe of Issachar,
16and Eliab son of Helon was over the company of the tribe of Zebulun.
17Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and the Merarites, who carried it, set out.
18Next the standard of the camp of Reuben set out, company by company, and Elizur son of Shedeur was over its company.
19Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the company of the tribe of Simeon,
20and Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the company of the tribe of Gad.
21Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy things, and the tabernacle was set up before they arrived.
22Next the standard of the camp of Ephraim set out, company by company, and Elishama son of Ammihud was over its company.
23Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the company of the tribe of Manasseh,
24and Abidan son of Gideoni was over the company of the tribe of Benjamin.
25Finally the standard of the camp of Dan set out as rear guard for all the camps, company by company, and Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai was over its company.
26Pagiel son of Ochran was over the company of the tribe of Asher,
27and Ahira son of Enan was over the company of the tribe of Naphtali.
28This was the marching order of the Israelites, company by company, as they set out.
29Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, the father-in-law of Moses, "We are setting out for the place of which the LORD said, 'I will give it to you.' Come with us, and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised good things to Israel."
30But he answered, "I will not go. I am going back to my own land and my own people."
31Moses said, "Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.
32If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good the LORD gives us."
33So they set out from the mountain of the LORD and traveled for three days, with the ark of the covenant of the LORD going before them those three days to seek out a resting place for them.
34And the cloud of the LORD was over them by day whenever they set out from the camp.
35Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say, "Rise up, O LORD! Let your enemies be scattered; let those who hate you flee before you."
36And whenever it came to rest, he would say, "Return, O LORD, to the countless thousands of Israel."
