In the book of Nehemiah, Ajja is mentioned among the Levites who were tasked with explaining God’s law to the people during the great public reading at the Water Gate in Jerusalem. While Ezra read aloud from the Torah, Ajja and the other Levites conveyed its meaning in a way that was understandable to those gathered. This interpretive service was of crucial importance for the Jewish community after their return from Babylon, where many had lost familiarity with the sacred writings during the years of exile. Through the teaching of the Levites, the people’s spiritual grounding in God’s covenant was renewed, and the foundation was laid for a deeper, Scripture-based devotion in the restored community.
