Alvan
Descendant of Seir the Horite

As the firstborn son of the Horite clan leader Zobaal and grandson of Seir, Alvan — also known by the name form Aljan — was part of the original people in the hill country of Seir, southeast of the Dead Sea. The Horites had an established clan structure in this area before the Edomites, Esau's descendants, took over the land (cf. Deut 2:12). That both Genesis and 1 Chronicles preserve the genealogies of the Horites shows the biblical narrative's broad interest in the peoples around Israel and provides valuable insight into the ethnic diversity of southern Transjordan during the patriarchal period.
