Ashpenaz served as the chief official at King Nebuchadnezzar's court in Babylon and held the title 'sar hassarisim', which can be translated as 'chief of the officials' or 'chief of the eunuchs'. The king tasked him with selecting promising young men from Israel's royal and noble families for training in Chaldean wisdom, literature, and language. Through this office, Ashpenaz brought Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah into the service of the Babylonian court and gave them new Babylonian names as part of a cultural assimilation process. When Daniel asked to be exempted from the king's food and wine in order to maintain his ritual purity, God intervened and caused Daniel to find favor and compassion with Ashpenaz. Despite his sympathy for Daniel, Ashpenas feared the king's anger if the young men appeared worse off than the others, so Daniel had to approach a subordinate overseer to carry out his plan. Ashpenaz's role highlights the tension between the empire's demands for assimilation and God's faithful care for His people in exile.

King Nebuchadnezzar ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of the eunuchs, to bring some of the sons of Israel, from the royal family and from the nobility, to serve at the court.
Requirements for the selected youths
Ashpenaz was tasked with choosing young men without defect, handsome in appearance, capable of learning wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, who were fit to serve in the king's palace and be trained in the writing and language of the Chaldeans.

The king decreed that the selected young men should receive food from the king's table and wine from his cup, and that they should be trained for three years before entering the king's service.
Daniel and His Friends Are Chosen and Given New Names
Among those chosen from the descendants of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. The chief official gave them new Babylonian names: Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—names that included references to Babylonian deities.
God Grants Daniel Favor with Ashpenaz
When Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the king's food or wine, God caused him to find favor and compassion in the eyes of Ashpenaz, so that he was willing to listen to Daniel's request.
Ashpenaz Expresses Fear of the King
Ashpenaz expressed his concern to Daniel that the king might find these Israelite youths in worse condition than the others, which would endanger his own life. This led Daniel to approach the overseer instead.
