Mentioned in the List of Edomite Kings

Baal-Hanan, son of Achbor, became king in Edom after the death of Saul (an Edomite Saul, not Israel's Saul). He is listed as one of the kings who reigned in Edom before the kings of Israel.

38When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Achbor succeeded him as king.
39When Baal-Hanan son of Achbor died, Hadar succeeded him as king. His city was named Pau, and his wife's name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab.

The Line of Edomite Kings in Chronicles

Baal-Hanan is mentioned again in 1 Chronicles as part of the same list of Edomite rulers, confirming his historical role.

49When Shaul died, Baal-hanan son of Achbor reigned in his place.
50When Baal-hanan died, Hadad reigned in his place; his city was named Pai, and his wife's name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-zahab.

Successor to the Previous King

Baal-Hanan took the throne after the death of the preceding Edomite king, Saul from Rehoboth by the River, and continued the governance of Edom.

37When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth on the River succeeded him as king.
38When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Achbor succeeded him as king.

Succeeded by Hadar

When Baal-Hanan, son of Achbor, died, Hadar (also called Hadad) became king in his place. His wife was named Mehetabel, daughter of Matred.

39When Baal-Hanan son of Achbor died, Hadar succeeded him as king. His city was named Pau, and his wife's name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab.

Part of Esau's lineage

The king list where Baal-Hanan is mentioned is part of the broader account of Esau's descendants and their establishment in the land of Edom, showing God's fulfillment of the promise that Esau would also become a great nation.

1This is the family history of Esau, that is, Edom.
8So Esau settled in the hill country of Seir. Esau is Edom.
31These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the Israelites.
