Mentioned in the list of Edomite kings

Bedad is mentioned as the father of Hadad in the list of kings who ruled in Edom before Israel had kings. This places him in an early period of Edom's history.

35When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad succeeded him as king. He defeated Midian in the country of Moab, and his city was named Avith.

Parallel mention in Chronicles

Bedad is again mentioned as the father of Hadad in the parallel king list in 1 Chronicles, confirming his place in Edom's family history.

46When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place; his city was named Avith.

Context: Kings of Edom before Israel

Bedad belonged to a time when Edom already had established kingdoms, long before Israel received its first king. The list of Edomite kings shows a series of rulers who did not follow dynastic succession.

31These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the Israelites.

Son's victory over Midian

Bedad's son Hadad defeated the Midianites on the fields of Moab, which was an important military event in early Edomite history. Hadad ruled from the city of Avith.

35When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad succeeded him as king. He defeated Midian in the country of Moab, and his city was named Avith.
