Der ExodusMatriarchc. 1500 BC

Bithiah was a daughter of Pharaoh who found the infant Moses in a basket among the reeds by the Nile and adopted him as her own son. According to Jewish tradition and 1 Chronicles, she was identified as Bithiah, daughter of Pharaoh, who later married Mered from the tribe of Judah. She played a crucial role in God's plan of salvation by saving Moses from death and raising him in the Egyptian court.

Finding Moses in the Nile

Pharaoh's daughter went down to the Nile to bathe and discovered a basket with a crying baby boy among the reeds. She felt compassion for the child and decided to take him in.

5Then Pharaoh's daughter came down to bathe in the Nile while her attendants walked along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to fetch it.
6When she opened it, she saw the child—a baby boy, crying. She felt sorry for him and said, "This is one of the Hebrew children."

Adopting Moses

Pharaoh's daughter took the child as her own son and named him Moses, which means "drawn out of water," because she had drawn him out of the water.

10When the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, "Because I drew him out of the water." [Footnote: The name Moses sounds like the Hebrew word meaning "to draw out."]

Arranging a Nurse for Moses

Moses' sister Miriam offered to fetch a Hebrew nurse, and Pharaoh's daughter accepted. Thus Moses was nursed by his own biological mother Jochebed.

7Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and find you a Hebrew woman to nurse the child for you?"
8"Yes, go," said Pharaoh's daughter. So the girl went and called the child's mother.
9Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child and nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages." So the woman took the child and nursed him.

Mentioned as Bithiah in Chronicles

In 1 Chronicles, Bithiah is mentioned as the daughter of Pharaoh and wife of Mered from the tribe of Judah, indicating that she left Egypt and became part of God's people.

17The sons of Ezrah: Jether, Mered, Epher, and Jalon. And she conceived and bore Miriam, Shammai, and Ishbah the father of Eshtemoa.
18Mered's Judahite wife bore Jered the father of Gedor, Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. These were the sons of Bithiah, Pharaoh's daughter, whom Mered had married.

Moses' faith and choice

The book of Hebrews tells us that by faith Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter when he grew up, choosing instead to suffer with God's people rather than enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

24By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter.
25He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
26He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his reward.
