The city of Dan – the northern border town of Israel
Dan is a place name mentioned in Genesis 14:14, where Abraham pursued the enemies who had captured Lot all the way to Dan. The place later became known as the northernmost city of Israel, and the expression "from Dan to Be'er-Sheba" was used to describe the entire extent of the land. Although this is not a person, the place name is closely tied to Israel's history and geography throughout the Old Testament.

Abraham's pursuit to Dan
Abraham pursued the kings who had taken Lot captive all the way to Dan and defeated them there.
14When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he mustered his trained men, born in his household, three hundred eighteen of them, and pursued as far as Dan.

Spies from the tribe of Dan explore Laish
The Danites sent spies to explore Laish, which they later captured and renamed Dan.
1In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the tribe of the Danites was looking for an inheritance to settle in, because down to that day no inheritance had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.
בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔ם אֵ֥ין מֶ֖לֶךְ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּבַיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֗ם שֵׁ֣בֶט הַדָּנִ֞י מְבַקֶּשׁ־ל֤וֹ נַֽחֲלָה֙ לָשֶׁ֔בֶת כִּי֩ לֹֽא־נָ֨פְלָה לּ֜וֹ עַד־הַיּ֥וֹם הַה֛וּא בְּתוֹךְ־שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּנַחֲלָֽה׃ ס
2So the Danites sent out five men from their clan, chosen from among them all, capable men from Zorah and Eshtaol, to scout the land and explore it. They told them, "Go, explore the land." The men came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and spent the night there.
וַיִּשְׁלְח֣וּ בְנֵי־דָ֣ן ׀ מִֽמִּשְׁפַּחְתָּ֡ם חֲמִשָּׁ֣ה אֲנָשִׁ֣ים מִקְצוֹתָם֩ אֲנָשִׁ֨ים בְּנֵי־חַ֜יִל מִצָּרְעָ֣ה וּמֵֽאֶשְׁתָּאֹ֗ל לְרַגֵּ֤ל אֶת־הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ וּלְחָקְרָ֔הּ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם לְכ֖וּ חִקְר֣וּ אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ הַר־אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ עַד־בֵּ֣ית מִיכָ֔ה וַיָּלִ֖ינוּ שָֽׁם׃
27They took what Micah had made, along with his priest, and came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting. They struck them down with the sword and burned the city.
וְהֵ֨מָּה לָקְח֜וּ אֵ֧ת אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֣ה מִיכָ֗ה וְֽאֶת־הַכֹּהֵן֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָה־לוֹ֒ וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ עַל־לַ֗יִשׁ עַל־עַם֙ שֹׁקֵ֣ט וּבֹטֵ֔חַ וַיַּכּ֥וּ אוֹתָ֖ם לְפִי־חָ֑רֶב וְאֶת־הָעִ֖יר שָׂרְפ֥וּ בָאֵֽשׁ׃
28There was no one to rescue them, for the city was far from Sidon and they had no dealings with anyone. It lay in the valley near Beth-rehob. The Danites rebuilt the city and settled there.
וְאֵ֨ין מַצִ֜יל כִּ֧י רְֽחוֹקָה־הִ֣יא מִצִּיד֗וֹן וְדָבָ֤ר אֵין־לָהֶם֙ עִם־אָדָ֔ם וְהִ֕יא בָּעֵ֖מֶק אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְבֵית־רְח֑וֹב וַיִּבְנ֥וּ אֶת־הָעִ֖יר וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ בָֽהּ׃
29They named it Dan, after their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel; but the city's name had formerly been Laish.
וַיִּקְרְא֤וּ שֵׁם־הָעִיר֙ דָּ֔ן בְּשֵׁם֙ דָּ֣ן אֲבִיהֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יוּלַּ֖ד לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְאוּלָ֛ם לַ֥יִשׁ שֵׁם־הָעִ֖יר לָרִאשֹׁנָֽה׃
The Danites conquer Laish and establish idol worship
The tribe of Dan conquered the city of Laish, called it Dan, and set up a carved image there.
29They named it Dan, after their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel; but the city's name had formerly been Laish.
וַיִּקְרְא֤וּ שֵׁם־הָעִיר֙ דָּ֔ן בְּשֵׁם֙ דָּ֣ן אֲבִיהֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יוּלַּ֖ד לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְאוּלָ֛ם לַ֥יִשׁ שֵׁם־הָעִ֖יר לָרִאשֹׁנָֽה׃
30The Danites set up the carved image for themselves, and Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Manasseh,[^1] and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day the land went into exile.

31So they set up for themselves Micah's carved image, the one he had made, and it stood there as long as the house of God was at Shiloh.

Jeroboam's golden calf in Dan
King Jeroboam set up one of his two golden calves in Dan to prevent the people from going to Jerusalem to worship.
28So the king took counsel and made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt."
וַיִּוָּעַ֣ץ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיַּ֕עַשׂ שְׁנֵ֖י עֶגְלֵ֣י זָהָ֑ב וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֗ם רַב־לָכֶם֙ מֵעֲל֣וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם הִנֵּ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֶעֱל֖וּךָ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
29He set up one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.

30And this thing became a sin, for the people went before the one calf even as far as Dan.
וַיְהִ֛י הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה לְחַטָּ֑את וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ הָעָ֛ם לִפְנֵ֥י הָאֶחָ֖ד עַד־דָּֽן׃
"From Dan to Be'er-Sheba" – an expression for all Israel
The expression "from Dan to Beersheba" was repeatedly used to describe the entire geographical extent of Israel from north to south.
1Then all the Israelites came out, and the whole assembly gathered as one man before the LORD at Mizpah, from Dan to Beersheba, including the land of Gilead.
וַיֵּצְאוּ֮ כָּל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַתִּקָּהֵ֨ל הָעֵדָ֜ה כְּאִ֣ישׁ אֶחָ֗ד לְמִדָּן֙ וְעַד־בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע וְאֶ֖רֶץ הַגִּלְעָ֑ד אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה הַמִּצְפָּֽה׃
20And all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the LORD.
וַיֵּ֙דַע֙ כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִדָּ֖ן וְעַד־בְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע כִּ֚י נֶאֱמָ֣ן שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל לְנָבִ֖יא לַיהוָֽה׃
Ben-Hadad's Attack on Dan
The Syrian king Ben-Hadad attacked and captured Dan along with other cities in northern Israel.
20Ben-Hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the cities of Israel. He struck down Ijon, Dan, Abel Beth Maacah, and all Kinneroth, along with all the land of Naphtali.
וַיִּשְׁמַ֨ע בֶּן־הֲדַ֜ד אֶל־הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אָסָ֗א וַ֠יִּשְׁלַח אֶת־שָׂרֵ֨י הַחֲיָלִ֤ים אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ֙ עַל־עָרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיַּךְ֙ אֶת־עִיּ֣וֹן וְאֶת־דָּ֔ן וְאֵ֖ת אָבֵ֣ל בֵּֽית־מַעֲכָ֑ה וְאֵת֙ כָּל־כִּנְר֔וֹת עַ֖ל כָּל־אֶ֥רֶץ נַפְתָּלִֽי׃
