Participation in public prayer and confession

Hashabniah was among the Levites who stood up and cried out with a loud voice to the Lord their God during the great public gathering for prayer in Jerusalem.

4On the platform of the Levites stood Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Kenani, and they cried out with a loud voice to the LORD their God.
5Then the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah—said: "Stand up and bless the LORD your God from everlasting to everlasting." "Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above every blessing and praise.

The people's confession of sin

As part of the group of Levites, Hashabniah led the people in a long prayer that reviewed God's faithfulness and Israel's repeated sins throughout history.

6You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, the highest heavens and all their host, the earth and everything on it, the seas and everything in them. You give life to them all, and the host of heaven bows down before you.
7You are the LORD God, who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and gave him the name Abraham.
8You found his heart faithful before you, and you made a covenant with him to give him the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and Girgashites—to give it to his descendants. And you have kept your word, for you are righteous.

Sealing of the covenant

Hashabniah was among those who placed their seal on the written covenant in which the people committed themselves to follow God's law.

1In view of all this, we are entering into a binding agreement, put in writing; and on the sealed document are the names of our officials, our Levites, and our priests.
10The Levites: Jeshua son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel,

11and their fellow Levites: Shebaniah, Hodiah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan,

Rebuilding and organizing Jerusalem

In connection with the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls, a Hashabnia (or his son) is mentioned as leader over half a district, showing the family's leading position in society.

10Next to them Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs opposite his own house, and next to him Hattush son of Hashabniah.

Renewal of worship in the temple

As a Levite, Hashabnia contributed to restoring orderly worship in the temple after the exile, in line with the reforms of Ezra and Nehemiah.

24The leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua son of Kadmiel, with their kinsmen standing opposite them, to praise and give thanks according to the command of David the man of God, watch answering watch.
25Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were gatekeepers, standing guard at the storerooms by the gates.
