Jahath was a Levite from the clan of Merari who served in the temple. He was among those who had a role in worship and the service of the Levites, and is mentioned in several genealogies in 1 Chronicles. The name Jahath appears multiple times in the Bible and refers to different Levites in various generations.
11Jahath was the chief and Zizah the second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family with one assignment. [footnote: Zizah is called Zina in the preceding verse; both spellings occur in the Hebrew text.]
12The men did the work faithfully. Over them were appointed Jahath and Obadiah, Levites of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam of the sons of the Kohathites, to direct them, along with the Levites who were all skilled with musical instruments.
13The sons of Samuel: Joel the firstborn, and Abijah the second. [Footnote: The Hebrew here reads "the firstborn, Vashni, and Abijah"; the name Joel is supplied from other lists of Samuel's sons, and "Vashni" is understood as "and the second."]
