The Prophet's Symbolic Son

Das geteilte Königreichc. 750 B.C.E.

Jezreel was the firstborn son of the prophet Hosea and his wife Gomer. His name, meaning 'God sows' or 'God scatters,' served as a prophetic message about God's coming judgment on the house of Jehu for the bloodshed in the Valley of Jezreel, but also as a promise of future restoration.

Naming as a Prophetic Sign

God commanded Hosea to name his son Jezreel as a sign that God would soon punish the house of Jehu for the bloodshed in the Valley of Jezreel.

4And the LORD said to him, "Name him Jezreel, for in a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood shed at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.
5On that day I will break Israel's bow in the Valley of Jezreel."

A Symbol of Israel's Judgment

Jezreel's name pointed to the coming judgment on the kingdom of Israel, where God would break Israel's bow in the Valley of Jezreel.

5On that day I will break Israel's bow in the Valley of Jezreel."

Promise of Restoration

Despite the judgment, the name also contains a hope for future restoration, where 'the day of Jezreel' will be great and the people will once again be united under one leader.

Part of the family's prophetic message

Together with his siblings Lo-Ruhama and Lo-Ammi, Jezreel formed a living prophetic illustration of God's relationship with Israel.

22I will betroth you to myself in faithfulness, and you will know the LORD.
23On that day I will answer, declares the LORD—I will answer the heavens, and they will answer the earth;
