Start Personen Carpus Carpus was a Christian in Troas with whom the apostle Paul left his cloak and scrolls. He is mentioned only once in the Bible, in 2 Timothy 4:13. Although little is known about him, Paul's trust in him suggests that he was a reliable believer and an important supporter of the apostle's ministry.

The mention of Carpus occurs in Paul's last known letter, written from prison in Rome, where he urges Timothy to come to him soon.

21 Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends you greetings, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers and sisters. griech Σπούδασον πρὸ χειμῶνος ἐλθεῖν. Ἀσπάζεταί σε Εὔβουλος καὶ Πούδης καὶ Λίνος καὶ Κλαυδία καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ πάντες.
Troas was a key hub for the early Christian mission, which Paul had visited several times. Carpus was part of the Christian community there.
8 So they passed by Mysia and came down to Troas. griech παρελθόντες δὲ τὴν Μυσίαν κατέβησαν εἰς Τρῳάδα.
9 During the night Paul had a vision: a man of Macedonia was standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us!" griech καὶ ὅραμα ⸀διὰ νυκτὸς ⸂τῷ Παύλῳ ὤφθη⸃, ἀνὴρ ⸂Μακεδών τις ἦν⸃ ἑστὼς ⸀καὶ παρακαλῶν αὐτὸν καὶ λέγων· Διαβὰς εἰς Μακεδονίαν βοήθησον ἡμῖν.
10 When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the gospel to them. griech ὡς δὲ τὸ ὅραμα εἶδεν, εὐθέως ἐζητήσαμεν ἐξελθεῖν ⸀εἰς Μακεδονίαν, συμβιβάζοντες ὅτι προσκέκληται ἡμᾶς ὁ ⸀θεὸς εὐαγγελίσασθαι αὐτούς.
11 So we put out to sea from Troas and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day on to Neapolis, griech Ἀναχθέντες ⸀οὖν ⸀ἀπὸ Τρῳάδος εὐθυδρομήσαμεν εἰς Σαμοθρᾴκην, τῇ ⸀δὲ ἐπιούσῃ εἰς ⸂Νέαν Πόλιν⸃,
5 These men went on ahead and waited for us at Troas. griech οὗτοι ⸀δὲ ⸀προσελθόντες ἔμενον ἡμᾶς ἐν Τρῳάδι·
6 We sailed from Philippi after the Festival of Unleavened Bread and joined them at Troas five days later, and there we stayed seven days. griech ἡμεῖς δὲ ἐξεπλεύσαμεν μετὰ τὰς ἡμέρας τῶν ἀζύμων ἀπὸ Φιλίππων, καὶ ἤλθομεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν Τρῳάδα ἄχρι ἡμερῶν πέντε, ⸀οὗ διετρίψαμεν ἡμέρας ἑπτά.
7 On the first day of the week we gathered to break bread, and Paul spoke to them. Since he intended to leave the next day, he kept on talking until midnight. griech Ἐν δὲ τῇ μιᾷ τῶν σαββάτων συνηγμένων ⸀ἡμῶν κλάσαι ἄρτον ὁ Παῦλος διελέγετο αὐτοῖς, μέλλων ἐξιέναι τῇ ἐπαύριον, παρέτεινέν τε τὸν λόγον μέχρι μεσονυκτίου.
The fact that Paul left valuable personal belongings with Carpus shows that he was a trusted fellow believer whom Paul relied on in his ministry.
