Caleb's brother and ancestor of Othniel

Kenaz is known in the Bible as a descendant of Esau through Eliphaz, and as the father of Othniel, Israel's first judge. He belonged to the Kenizzites, a clan that was incorporated into the tribe of Judah. Through his son Othniel, Kenaz's family played an important role in the conquest and settlement of the land of Canaan.

וַיִּזְעֲק֤וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּ֨קֶם יְהוָ֥ה מוֹשִׁ֛יעַ לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיּֽוֹשִׁיעֵ֑ם אֵ֚ת עָתְנִיאֵ֣ל בֶּן־קְנַ֔ז אֲחִ֥י כָלֵ֖ב הַקָּטֹ֥ן מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃
10The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.
וַתְּהִ֨י עָלָ֥יו רֽוּחַ־יְהוָה֮ וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֣ט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַיֵּצֵא֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וַיִּתֵּ֤ן יְהוָה֙ בְּיָד֔וֹ אֶת־כּוּשַׁ֥ן רִשְׁעָתַ֖יִם מֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָ֑ם וַתָּ֣עָז יָד֔וֹ עַ֖ל כּוּשַׁ֥ן רִשְׁעָתָֽיִם׃
11So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.
וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט הָאָ֖רֶץ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּ֖מָת עָתְנִיאֵ֥ל בֶּן־קְנַֽז׃ פ
The Kenizzites in Esau's lineage
Kenez is listed as a chief among Esau's descendants in Edom, which shows the clan's origin.
11The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.

15These are the chiefs among Esau's descendants. The sons of Eliphaz, Esau's firstborn: Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz,
אֵ֖לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־עֵשָׂ֑ו בְּנֵ֤י אֱלִיפַז֙ בְּכ֣וֹר עֵשָׂ֔ו אַלּ֤וּף תֵּימָן֙ אַלּ֣וּף אוֹמָ֔ר אַלּ֥וּף צְפ֖וֹ אַלּ֥וּף קְנַֽז׃
42Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar,
אַלּ֥וּף קְנַ֛ז אַלּ֥וּף תֵּימָ֖ן אַלּ֥וּף מִבְצָֽר׃
Othniel's Conquest of Kirjath-Sepher
Kenez's son Othniel conquered the city of Kirjath-Sepher (Debir) and received Caleb's daughter, Achsah, as his wife as a reward.
15From there he went up against the inhabitants of Debir, formerly called Kiriath Sepher.
וַיַּ֣עַל מִשָּׁ֔ם אֶל־יֹשְׁבֵ֖י דְּבִ֑ר וְשֵׁם־דְּבִ֥ר לְפָנִ֖ים קִרְיַת־סֵֽפֶר׃
16And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher."
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כָּלֵ֔ב אֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּ֥ה אֶת־קִרְיַת־סֵ֖פֶר וּלְכָדָ֑הּ וְנָתַ֥תִּי ל֛וֹ אֶת־עַכְסָ֥ה בִתִּ֖י לְאִשָּֽׁה׃
17Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's brother, captured it, so Caleb gave him his daughter Aksah in marriage.
וַֽיִּלְכְּדָ֛הּ עָתְנִיאֵ֥ל בֶּן־קְנַ֖ז אֲחִ֣י כָלֵ֑ב וַיִּתֶּן־ל֛וֹ אֶת־עַכְסָ֥ה בִתּ֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃
12Caleb said, "Whoever attacks Kiriath-sepher and takes it, I will give him my daughter Achsah in marriage."
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כָּלֵ֔ב אֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּ֥ה אֶת־קִרְיַת־סֵ֖פֶר וּלְכָדָ֑הּ וְנָתַ֥תִּי ל֛וֹ אֶת־עַכְסָ֥ה בִתִּ֖י לְאִשָּֽׁה׃
13Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it, so Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah in marriage.

Othniel as Israel's First Judge
Kenez's son Othniel was raised up by the Lord as Israel's first judge and delivered the people from the oppression of Cushan-Rishathaim.
9Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up a deliverer for them, who saved them: Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
וַיִּזְעֲק֤וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּ֨קֶם יְהוָ֥ה מוֹשִׁ֛יעַ לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיּֽוֹשִׁיעֵ֑ם אֵ֚ת עָתְנִיאֵ֣ל בֶּן־קְנַ֔ז אֲחִ֥י כָלֵ֖ב הַקָּטֹ֥ן מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

Kenez in the Genealogies of Judah
In 1 Chronicles, Kenez and his descendants are mentioned as part of the genealogy of the tribe of Judah, confirming the clan's integration into Israel.
13The sons of Kenaz: Othniel and Seraiah. The sons of Othniel: Hathath.
וּבְנֵ֣י קְנַ֔ז עָתְנִיאֵ֖ל וּשְׂרָיָ֑ה וּבְנֵ֥י עָתְנִיאֵ֖ל חֲתַֽת׃
14Meonothai fathered Ophrah, and Seraiah fathered Joab, the father of Ge-harashim,[^1] so called because its people were craftsmen.

15The sons of Caleb son of Jephunneh: Iru, Elah, and Naam. The sons of Elah: Kenaz.
וּבְנֵי֙ כָּלֵ֣ב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּ֔ה עִ֥ירוּ אֵלָ֖ה וָנָ֑עַם וּבְנֵ֥י אֵלָ֖ה וּקְנַֽז׃
Caleb as a Kenizzite
Caleb is called a 'Kenizzite,' which links him directly to Kenez and shows that the Kenizzites were an accepted part of the tribe of Judah.
12not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.'
בִּלְתִּ֞י כָּלֵ֤ב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּה֙ הַקְּנִזִּ֔י וִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ בִּן־נ֑וּן כִּ֥י מִלְא֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃
6Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him: "You know what the LORD said to Moses, the man of God, at Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me.
וַיִּגְּשׁ֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יְהוּדָ֤ה אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ בַּגִּלְגָּ֔ל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו כָּלֵ֥ב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּ֖ה הַקְּנִזִּ֑י אַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֡עְתָּ אֶֽת־הַדָּבָר֩ אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֨ר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים עַ֧ל אֹדוֹתַ֛י וְעַ֥ל אֹדוֹתֶ֖יךָ בְּקָדֵ֥שׁ בַּרְנֵֽעַ׃
14So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.
עַל־כֵּ֣ן הָיְתָֽה־חֶ֠בְרוֹן לְכָלֵ֨ב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּ֤ה הַקְּנִזִּי֙ לְֽנַחֲלָ֔ה עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה יַ֚עַן אֲשֶׁ֣ר מִלֵּ֔א אַחֲרֵ֕י יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
