Das geteilte KönigreichLeaderc. 900–700 BC (as a fortified city)

Lachish was an important fortified city in the kingdom of Judah, strategically located in the southwest of the land. The city is best known for being besieged and conquered by the Assyrian king Sennacherib in 701 BC, as well as for having served as a refuge for King Amaziah. Although Lachish is primarily a place name and not a person, the city is mentioned in several important biblical contexts related to the kings and prophets of Judah.

Joshua's conquest of Lachish

During the conquest of Canaan, Joshua attacked Lachish and captured the city, striking down all its inhabitants with the sword.

31Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish. He laid siege to it and attacked it.
32The LORD gave Lachish into Israel's hand, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He put it to the sword along with everyone in it, just as he had done to Libnah.
33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his people, until no survivor was left.

Fortification under Rehoboam

King Rehoboam fortified Lachish as one of the defense cities in Judah to protect the kingdom's southwestern border.

5Rehoboam settled in Jerusalem and built up cities for defense in Judah.

King Amaziah's flight to Lachish

When a conspiracy was made against King Amaziah in Jerusalem, he fled to Lachish, but was pursued and killed there.

19A conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there.
27From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the LORD, they conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there.

Sennacherib's Siege of Lachish

The Assyrian king Sennacherib besieged and captured Lachish during his campaign against Judah in 701 BC, and from there sent his envoys to King Hezekiah in Jerusalem.

13In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.
14So Hezekiah king of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria at Lachish: "I have sinned. Withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand of me." The king of Assyria imposed on Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
17The king of Assyria sent the Tartan, the Rab-saris, and the Rabshakeh with a large army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They came up to Jerusalem and took their stand by the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer's Field.
9Afterward, while Sennacherib king of Assyria was still at Lachish with all his forces, he sent his servants to Jerusalem, to Hezekiah king of Judah and to all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem, with this message:

The Prophet Micah's Warning to Lachish

The prophet Micah warned Lachish and called the city a starting point of sin for the daughter of Zion, because the city had followed the sins of Israel.

13Harness the horses to the chariot, you who live in Lachish. You were the beginning of sin for Daughter Zion, for in you the transgressions of Israel were found.

Lachish under Nebuchadnezzar's Attack

During Nebuchadnezzar's campaign against Judah, Lachish was one of the last cities to hold out along with Azekah, as described by the prophet Jeremiah.

7while the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and against the remaining cities of Judah—against Lachish and Azekah, for these were the fortified cities still left in Judah.
