He Who Was Raised
Lazarus of Bethany was the brother of Martha and Mary, and a close friend of Jesus. When he died, Jesus waited four days before coming - only to raise him from the dead in one of the Bible's most dramatic miracles. This miracle was the direct reason why the leaders decided to kill Jesus.

Lazarus' Illness and Death
The sisters sent word to Jesus that Lazarus was sick, but Jesus waited before coming.
1Now a man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
Ἦν δέ τις ἀσθενῶν, Λάζαρος ἀπὸ Βηθανίας ἐκ τῆς κώμης Μαρίας καὶ Μάρθας τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτῆς.
3So the sisters sent word to him: "Lord, the one you love is ill."
ἀπέστειλαν οὖν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσαι· Κύριε, ἴδε ὃν φιλεῖς ἀσθενεῖ.
4When Jesus heard it, he said, "This illness does not end in death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."
ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Αὕτη ἡ ἀσθένεια οὐκ ἔστιν πρὸς θάνατον ἀλλʼ ὑπὲρ τῆς δόξης τοῦ θεοῦ ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ διʼ αὐτῆς.
6So when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two more days in the place where he was.
ὡς οὖν ἤκουσεν ὅτι ἀσθενεῖ, τότε μὲν ἔμεινεν ἐν ᾧ ἦν τόπῳ δύο ἡμέρας·
11After saying this, he told them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him."
ταῦτα εἶπεν, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει αὐτοῖς· Λάζαρος ὁ φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται, ἀλλὰ πορεύομαι ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν.
14So then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead,
τότε οὖν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς παρρησίᾳ· Λάζαρος ἀπέθανεν,
Jesus Wept
At the tomb, Jesus wept - the shortest and most moving verse in the Bible.
33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
Ἰησοῦς οὖν ὡς εἶδεν αὐτὴν κλαίουσαν καὶ τοὺς συνελθόντας αὐτῇ Ἰουδαίους κλαίοντας ἐνεβριμήσατο τῷ πνεύματι καὶ ἐτάραξεν ἑαυτόν,
35Jesus wept.
ἐδάκρυσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς.
36So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!"
ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· Ἴδε πῶς ἐφίλει αὐτόν.
38Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, with a stone laid across it.
Ἰησοῦς οὖν πάλιν ἐμβριμώμενος ἐν ἑαυτῷ ἔρχεται εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον· ἦν δὲ σπήλαιον, καὶ λίθος ἐπέκειτο ἐπʼ αὐτῷ.
The Resurrection
Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb after four days, and many came to believe.
39"Take away the stone," Jesus said. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by now there is a stench; it has been four days."
λέγει ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἄρατε τὸν λίθον. λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ ἀδελφὴ τοῦ ⸀τετελευτηκότος Μάρθα· Κύριε, ἤδη ὄζει, τεταρταῖος γάρ ἐστιν.
41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
ἦραν οὖν τὸν ⸀λίθον. ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἦρεν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἄνω καὶ εἶπεν· Πάτερ, εὐχαριστῶ σοι ὅτι ἤκουσάς μου,
43When he had said this, he called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"
καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἐκραύγασεν· Λάζαρε, δεῦρο ἔξω.
44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of linen and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him and let him go."
⸀ἐξῆλθεν ὁ τεθνηκὼς δεδεμένος τοὺς πόδας καὶ τὰς χεῖρας κειρίαις, καὶ ἡ ὄψις αὐτοῦ σουδαρίῳ περιεδέδετο. λέγει ⸂αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς⸃· Λύσατε αὐτὸν καὶ ἄφετε ⸀αὐτὸν ὑπάγειν.
45Many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what Jesus did believed in him.
Πολλοὶ οὖν ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων, οἱ ἐλθόντες πρὸς τὴν ⸀Μαριὰμ καὶ θεασάμενοι ⸀ἃ ⸀ἐποίησεν, ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν·
The Murder Plot
Because of Lazarus, many Jews came to believe, so the leaders planned to kill him too.
9A large crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, and they came, not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
Ἔγνω ⸀οὖν ὄχλος πολὺς ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὅτι ἐκεῖ ἐστιν, καὶ ἦλθον οὐ διὰ τὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον, ἀλλʼ ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἴδωσιν ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν.
10So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
ἐβουλεύσαντο δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἀποκτείνωσιν,
11because on account of him many of the Jews were going over and believing in Jesus.
ὅτι πολλοὶ διʼ αὐτὸν ὑπῆγον τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἐπίστευον εἰς τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
