Nabopolassar was the founder of the Neo-Babylonian dynasty and father of Nebuchadnezzar II. He led the revolt against the Assyrian Empire and established Babylon as the dominant power in Mesopotamia. His military successes laid the foundation for his son's conquests, including the destruction of Jerusalem.
Nabopolassar revolted against Assyria and established himself as king in Babylon in 626 BC, thus laying the foundation for the empire that would take Judah into captivity.
1During his reign Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded the land, and Jehoiakim was his vassal for three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him.
2The LORD sent raiding bands against him—Chaldeans, Arameans, Moabites, and Ammonites. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, in keeping with the word the LORD had spoken through his servants the prophets.
19There is no relief for your injury; your wound is mortal. All who hear the news of you clap their hands over your fall—for who has not felt your endless cruelty?
9I am sending for all the tribes of the north, declares the LORD, and for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction and make them an object of horror and scorn, an everlasting ruin.
12But when the seventy years are complete, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation for their guilt, declares the LORD, and the land of the Chaldeans too, and I will make it a desolation forever.
Nabopolassar sent his son Nebuchadnezzar to lead the army, and at the battle of Carchemish in 605 BC he defeated Egypt, shortly before Nabopolassar's death.
