Der ExodusLeaderc. 1400 BC

On, son of Pelet, was a Reubenite who joined Korah's rebellion against the leadership of Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. He is mentioned only briefly in Numbers 16:1, and his further fate is not explicitly described in the text. Some Jewish traditions claim that his wife persuaded him to withdraw from the rebellion.

Participation in Korah's Rebellion

On, son of Pelet, is mentioned as one of the four main figures who rose up against the authority of Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

1Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, took action, along with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, descendants of Reuben.

The Rebellion Against Moses' Leadership

The rebels accused Moses and Aaron of exalting themselves above the Lord's congregation, claiming that the entire people were holy.

1Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, took action, along with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, descendants of Reuben.
2They rose up against Moses, together with two hundred and fifty men of Israel, leaders of the community, appointed members of the assembly, men of reputation.
3They gathered against Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD's assembly?"

Korah's Punishment

God punished the rebels by opening the earth and swallowing Korah, Dathan, and Abiram along with their families and possessions. On is not explicitly mentioned in the description of the punishment.

31As soon as he finished speaking these words, the ground under them split open.
32The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, along with all Korah's men and all their possessions.
33They went down alive to the realm of the dead, with everything they owned. The earth closed over them, and they perished from among the assembly.

Warning for future generations

The rebellion against Moses and Aaron became a lasting warning to the people of Israel about the consequences of rebelling against God's chosen leaders.

9and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. It was this Dathan and Abiram, chosen leaders of the community, who contended against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against the LORD.
10The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, when that company died and the fire consumed 250 men, and they became a warning sign.
11The sons of Korah, however, did not die.
