2 He had two wives; one was named Hannah, the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. hebr וְלוֹ֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֔ים שֵׁ֤ם אַחַת֙ חַנָּ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית פְּנִנָּ֑ה וַיְהִ֤י לִפְנִנָּה֙ יְלָדִ֔ים וּלְחַנָּ֖ה אֵ֥ין יְלָדִֽים׃
Unlike Hannah, who was barren, Peninnah had borne several sons and daughters to Elkanah.
2 He had two wives; one was named Hannah, the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. hebr וְלוֹ֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֔ים שֵׁ֤ם אַחַת֙ חַנָּ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית פְּנִנָּ֑ה וַיְהִ֤י לִפְנִנָּה֙ יְלָדִ֔ים וּלְחַנָּ֖ה אֵ֥ין יְלָדִֽים׃
4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. hebr וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וַיִּזְבַּ֖ח אֶלְקָנָ֑ה וְנָתַ֞ן לִפְנִנָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וּֽלְכָל־בָּנֶ֛יהָ וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ מָנֽוֹת׃
Peninnah tormented and offended Hannah repeatedly because of her barrenness, especially during the annual pilgrimages to Shiloh.
6 Her rival taunted her bitterly, provoking her because the LORD had closed her womb. hebr וְכִֽעֲסַ֤תָּה צָֽרָתָהּ֙ גַּם־כַּ֔עַס בַּעֲב֖וּר הַרְּעִמָ֑הּ כִּֽי־סָגַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה בְּעַ֥ד רַחְמָֽהּ׃
7 So it went year after year: every time Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, Peninnah would provoke her, and Hannah would weep and refuse to eat. hebr וְכֵ֨ן יַעֲשֶׂ֜ה שָׁנָ֣ה בְשָׁנָ֗ה מִדֵּ֤י עֲלֹתָהּ֙ בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה כֵּ֖ן תַּכְעִסֶ֑נָּה וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה וְלֹ֥א תֹאכַֽל׃
When Elkanah sacrificed, he gave portions to Peninnah and all her children, but Hannah received only one portion, which intensified the tension between the wives.
4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. hebr וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וַיִּזְבַּ֖ח אֶלְקָנָ֑ה וְנָתַ֞ן לִפְנִנָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וּֽלְכָל־בָּנֶ֛יהָ וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ מָנֽוֹת׃
5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, though the LORD had closed her womb. hebr וּלְחַנָּ֕ה יִתֵּ֛ן מָנָ֥ה אַחַ֖ת אַפָּ֑יִם כִּ֤י אֶת־חַנָּה֙ אָהֵ֔ב וַֽיהוָ֖ה סָגַ֥ר רַחְמָֽהּ׃
