Reba

Midianite king

Die LandnahmeKingc. 1400 BC

Reba was one of five Midianite kings who were killed by the Israelites after God's command through Moses. He was one of the five kings who ruled over Midian at the time when Israel prepared to enter the Promised Land. His downfall was part of God's judgment against the Midianites for their role in leading Israel into idolatry at Baal-Peor.

The War Against Midian

God commanded Moses to take vengeance on the Midianites for their role in leading Israel into sin and idolatry at Baal-Peor. An army of 12,000 Israelites was sent out against Midian.

1The LORD said to Moses,
2"Take vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. After that you will be gathered to your people."
3So Moses said to the people, "Arm some of your men for war, so they can go against Midian and carry out the LORD's vengeance on Midian.

Reba's death in battle

Reba was killed along with the four other Midianite kings—Evi, Rekem, Tsur, and Hur—during Israel's campaign against Midian.

8Among the slain were the kings of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.

The Death of Balaam

In the same battle where Reba was killed, the prophet Balaam was also put to death by the sword. Balaam had been the advisor who suggested using Midianite women to lead Israel into sin.

8Among the slain were the kings of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.
16"These were the very ones who followed Balaam's advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the LORD in the affair at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's assembly.

Reba Mentioned Among Sihon's Vassals

In the book of Joshua, Reba is listed as one of the Midianite princes who were vassals under the Amorite king Sihon and were killed by the Israelites.

21all the towns of the plateau and the entire kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the chiefs of Midian—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—princes allied with Sihon who lived in that land.

Background: Israel's Sin at Baal-Peor

Midianite women led Israelite men into idolatry and immorality at Baal-Peor, which provoked God's anger and brought a plague that killed 24,000 Israelites. This was the direct cause of the war against Midian.

1While Israel was staying at Shittim, the people began to commit sexual immorality with the women of Moab.
2These women invited the people to the sacrifices offered to their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.
3So Israel yoked itself to Baal of Peor, and the LORD's anger burned against Israel.
9Those who died in the plague numbered twenty-four thousand.
