Called Barnabas and Saulus

As proconsul on Cyprus, Sergius Paulus showed genuine interest in the gospel by sending for Barnabas and Saulus to hear God's word.

7who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsul sent for Barnabas and Saul, eager to hear the word of God.

Met opposition from Elymas

The sorcerer Elymas (Bar-Jesus), who served the proconsul, tried to prevent Sergius Paulus from coming to faith.

6They traveled through the whole island as far as Paphos, where they found a Jewish magician and false prophet named Bar-Jesus,
8But Elymas the magician—for that is what his name means—opposed them, trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith.

Testified to God's judgment on Elymas

Sergius Paulus saw how Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, proclaimed judgment against Elymas, who was struck blind.

9Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at him
10and said, "You are full of every kind of deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right! Will you never stop twisting the straight paths of the Lord?
εἶπεν· Ὦ πλήρης παντὸς δόλου καὶ πάσης ῥᾳδιουργίας, υἱὲ διαβόλου, ἐχθρὲ πάσης δικαιοσύνης, οὐ παύσῃ διαστρέφων τὰς ⸀ὁδοὺς κυρίου τὰς εὐθείας;
11Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you. You will be blind, unable to see the sun, for a time." Immediately a mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, looking for someone to lead him by the hand.

Came to faith

When the proconsul saw what happened and heard the Lord's teaching, he came to believe and was amazed by the teaching.

12When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, astounded at the teaching of the Lord.
