A complete group returning from exile
160 appears in the Bible in Ezra 8:10, where it is mentioned that 160 men from the descendants of Shelomith joined Ezra on the return journey from Babylon to Jerusalem. The number can be understood as 10 × 16, where ten symbolizes completeness and sixteen (4 × 4) may be linked to an intensified earthly wholeness. In this context, the 160 men represent a complete group that took part in the great restoration of the Jewish community in the promised land. Although the number 160 does not have a broad independent symbolic tradition in Jewish or Christian theology, it gains its meaning through the context: faithfulness, belonging, and participation in God’s redemptive-historical plan for return from exile. In Ezra 8, several family groups are listed along with their respective numbers of men who went up with Ezra from Babylon. These figures serve as documentation that the return was organized and complete, in accordance with God's will. The Hebrew word צלם (tselem, 'image/likeness') has a gematria value of 160 (צ = 90, ל = 30, מ = 40). The word is known from Genesis 1:26–27, where humanity is created in God's image (be-tselem Elohim). The connection between this word and the number 160 is numerologically interesting but has not gained a prominent place in classical Jewish interpretation.*
