The census number of the tribe of Asher
The number 53,000 appears as the base figure in the censuses of the tribe of Asher in Numbers. In the first census at Sinai (Num 2:30), Asher's army is listed as 53,400 registered men, and in the second census on the plains of Moab (Num 26:47), Asher's clans are counted at exactly the same number – 53,400. This remarkably stable size over forty years in the wilderness testifies to God's faithful care for this tribe throughout their journey. Asher was a son of Jacob and Zilpah, and his tribe was blessed with fertility and abundance. In Jacob's blessing it says that "Asher's bread shall be rich, and he shall yield royal delicacies" (Gen 49:20), and Moses' blessing promises that Asher shall "dip his foot in oil" (Deut 33:24). The fact that the tribe's military strength remained unchanged during the wilderness journey can be understood as a sign that God's promises of blessing over Asher were already at work during this period. That Asher's number is identical in both censuses (53,400) is very unusual. Most tribes show noticeable changes between the two counts—some increase significantly, others decrease—making Asher's stability particularly striking among the twelve tribes. The name Asher (אָשֵׁר) means 'happy' or 'blessed' and is derived from the root א-ש-ר, which expresses happiness and well-being. At his birth, Leah exclaimed: "Happy am I!" (Gen 30:13). In rabbinic tradition, the tribe of Asher is highlighted for its wealth and for supplying the rest of Israel with olive oil. The Talmud (Menachot 85b) notes that Asher was especially rich in olive trees, and that the oil from Asher's territory was preferred for temple use.*
