2nd Sunday in Lent
The struggle of faith and perseverance in prayer.

The Canaanite woman who does not give up even when Jesus seems dismissive: 'Lord, help me!... Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table' (Matt 15:21-28). Jacob's wrestling with God at Jabbok: 'I will not let you go unless you bless me' (Gen 32:24-30). Hebrews 11 on the witnesses of faith who held fast.
Betydning
Faith is not passive feelings but an active struggle — holding on to God even when He seems silent or dismissive. The Canaanite woman's faith is exemplary precisely because she does not give up. Jacob receives a new name (Israel = 'he who struggles with God') — the struggle of faith changes identity.

Jacob at Jabbok (Gen 32:24-30) is the central Old Testament text. Hannah who prays with tears in Shiloh and does not give up (1 Sam 1:9-20). Moses who holds his arms up in battle against Amalek (Exod 17:8-13) — perseverance in prayer during war.
Liturgisk kontekst
Purple color. In the middle of Lent, the theme of perseverance in faith deepens — preparation for Easter requires steadfastness.
Historie
This Sunday has traditionally focused on the struggle of prayer. Luther emphasized Anfechtung — the affliction where faith is tested and strengthened through doubt and struggle.
