The birth of John the Baptist — the forerunner who prepared the way.

Zechariah and Elizabeth receive the promise of a son in their old age (Luke 1:5-25). The angel Gabriel announces: 'He will be great before the Lord... filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb... he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah' (Luke 1:15-17). John's birth and Zechariah's song of praise — the Benedictus (Luke 1:57-80). John's own testimony: 'He must increase, but I must decrease' (John 3:30). The date June 24 is based on Luke 1:36 — Elizabeth was in her sixth month when Mary received her message.
Betydning
John is the link between the old and new covenants — the last prophet who points directly to God's Lamb. His humility ('I am not worthy to untie his sandal strap') and his willingness to step back serve as an example. The fact that he was born six months before Jesus is mirrored in the solstice: from Midsummer Day, the days grow shorter — 'he must decrease' — while toward Christmas they grow longer — 'he must increase'.

White color. Celebrated on June 24. One of the few saint's days that celebrates a birth (along with Christmas and the Annunciation). In Scandinavia, the day coincides with midsummer celebrations and St. John's Eve with bonfires.
Historie
The celebration of John's birth on June 24 is known from the 300s–400s. The date was set six months before Christmas (December 25) based on Luke 1:36. In Nordic folk culture, St. John's Eve (June 23) became associated with midsummer, bonfires, and light — Christian and pre-Christian traditions merged.
