Haggai's Call to Rebuild the Temple
The prophet Haggai urges Zerubbabel and the people to prioritize rebuilding the Lord's temple over their own houses. God promises to be with them and fill the new temple with glory.
Hageo 1,1-2,9
1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:
2This is what the LORD of hosts says: This people say, "The time has not come, the time for the house of the LORD to be built."
3Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
4Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?
5Now then, this is what the LORD of hosts says: Consider carefully how you have lived.
6You have sown much and harvested little. You eat, but are never full. You drink, but your thirst is never quenched. You put on clothes, but cannot keep warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.
7This is what the LORD of hosts says: Consider carefully how you have lived.
8Go up to the hill country, bring timber, and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored, says the LORD.
9You looked for much, but it came to little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because my house lies in ruins, while each of you hurries off to his own house.
10That is why the heavens above you have withheld their dew and the earth has withheld its produce.
11I called for a drought on the land and on the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, and the oil, on everything the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all the labor of your hands.
12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all the remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD.
13Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the LORD's message to the people: "I am with you, declares the LORD."
14So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,
15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month in the second year of King Darius.
1On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
2Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Say to them:
3Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? And how does it look to you now? Does it not seem like nothing in your eyes?
4Yet be strong now, Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD, and get to work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts.
5This is the covenant I made with you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit remains among you. Do not be afraid.
6For this is what the LORD of hosts says: Once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
7I will shake all the nations, and the treasures of all the nations will come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts.
8The silver is mine and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts.
9The glory of this latter house will be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will grant peace, declares the LORD of hosts.
