Instructions for Building an Altar
After the Lord has spoken from heaven, he gives Moses instructions on how the Israelites are to worship him. They must not make gods of silver or gold beside him. The altar is to be built of earth or of uncut stones—hewn stones would desecrate it. At every place where the name of the Lord is remembered, he promises to come and bless the people. They must also not go up to the altar by steps, so that their nakedness may not be exposed.
Éxodo 20,22-26
22Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say this to the Israelites: You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven.
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה כֹּ֥ה תֹאמַ֖ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אַתֶּ֣ם רְאִיתֶ֔ם כִּ֚י מִן־הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי עִמָּכֶֽם׃
23You shall not make gods of silver to be alongside me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.
לֹ֥א תַעֲשׂ֖וּן אִתִּ֑י אֱלֹ֤הֵי כֶ֙סֶף֙ וֵאלֹהֵ֣י זָהָ֔ב לֹ֥א תַעֲשׂ֖וּ לָכֶֽם׃
24Make an altar of earth for me, and on it sacrifice your burnt offerings and your fellowship offerings, your sheep and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.
מִזְבַּ֣ח אֲדָמָה֮ תַּעֲשֶׂה־לִּי֒ וְזָבַחְתָּ֣ עָלָ֗יו אֶת־עֹלֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ וְאֶת־שְׁלָמֶ֔יךָ אֶת־צֹֽאנְךָ֖ וְאֶת־בְּקָרֶ֑ךָ בְּכָל־הַמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אַזְכִּ֣יר אֶת־שְׁמִ֔י אָב֥וֹא אֵלֶ֖יךָ וּבֵרַכְתִּֽיךָ׃
25If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with cut stones, for if you use a chisel on it, you will defile it.
וְאִם־מִזְבַּ֤ח אֲבָנִים֙ תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־לִּ֔י לֹֽא־תִבְנֶ֥ה אֶתְהֶ֖ן גָּזִ֑ית כִּ֧י חַרְבְּךָ֛ הֵנַ֥פְתָּ עָלֶ֖יהָ וַתְּחַֽלְלֶֽהָ׃
26And do not go up to my altar on steps, so that your nakedness is not exposed on it."
וְלֹֽא־תַעֲלֶ֥ה בְמַעֲלֹ֖ת עַֽל־מִזְבְּחִ֑י אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא־תִגָּלֶ֥ה עֶרְוָתְךָ֖ עָלָֽיו׃ פ
