La vida de Jesús

James and John Ask for Places of Honor

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, ask Jesus to let them sit at his right and left hands in his glory. Jesus answers that they do not know what they are asking, and asks if they can drink the cup he drinks and be baptized with the baptism he is baptized with. When the other ten disciples become angry, Jesus teaches them that whoever wants to be great in God's kingdom must be a servant, just as the Son of Man came to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.

Marcos 10,35-45

35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask."
36"What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Τί θέλετε ⸀ποιήσω ὑμῖν;
37They said to him, "Grant that in your glory we may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left."
38Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?"
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε· δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ὃ ἐγὼ πίνω, ⸀ἢ τὸ βάπτισμα ὃ ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθῆναι;
39"We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized;
40but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant. It belongs to those for whom it has been prepared."
41When the ten heard this, they became angry with James and John.
42So Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
43It must not be like that among you. Instead, whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant,
44and whoever wants to be first among you must be slave of all.
45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
