I am the light of the world
Jesus declares himself to be the light of the world in the temple and comes into conflict with the Pharisees over his testimony and origin. He speaks of the Father who sent him, about the truth that sets free, and about how those who sin are slaves to sin. The discussion intensifies when Jesus says they have the devil as their father, and culminates in his statement: "Before Abraham was born, I am." Then they pick up stones to stone him, but Jesus hides himself and goes out of the temple.
Juan 8,12-59
12Again Jesus spoke to them: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life."
Πάλιν οὖν αὐτοῖς ⸂ἐλάλησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς⸃ λέγων· Ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου· ὁ ἀκολουθῶν ⸀ἐμοὶ οὐ μὴ περιπατήσῃ ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ, ἀλλʼ ἕξει τὸ φῶς τῆς ζωῆς.
13So the Pharisees said to him, "You are testifying about yourself. Your testimony is not true."
εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι· Σὺ περὶ σεαυτοῦ μαρτυρεῖς· ἡ μαρτυρία σου οὐκ ἔστιν ἀληθής.
14Jesus answered them, "Even if I do testify about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Κἂν ἐγὼ μαρτυρῶ περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ, ἀληθής ἐστιν ἡ μαρτυρία μου, ὅτι οἶδα πόθεν ἦλθον καὶ ποῦ ὑπάγω· ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἔρχομαι ⸀ἢ ποῦ ὑπάγω.
15You judge by human standards; I judge no one.
ὑμεῖς κατὰ τὴν σάρκα κρίνετε, ἐγὼ οὐ κρίνω οὐδένα.
16And even if I do judge, my judgment is valid, because I am not alone: I and the Father who sent me.
καὶ ἐὰν κρίνω δὲ ἐγώ, ἡ κρίσις ἡ ἐμὴ ⸀ἀληθινή ἐστιν, ὅτι μόνος οὐκ εἰμί, ἀλλʼ ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πέμψας με πατήρ.
17In your own law it is written that the testimony of two people is valid.
καὶ ἐν τῷ νόμῳ δὲ τῷ ὑμετέρῳ γέγραπται ὅτι δύο ἀνθρώπων ἡ μαρτυρία ἀληθής ἐστιν.
18I testify about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me."
ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ μαρτυρῶν περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ καὶ μαρτυρεῖ περὶ ἐμοῦ ὁ πέμψας με πατήρ.
19So they asked him, "Where is your father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ· Ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ πατήρ σου; ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Οὔτε ἐμὲ οἴδατε οὔτε τὸν πατέρα μου· εἰ ἐμὲ ᾔδειτε, καὶ τὸν πατέρα μου ⸂ἂν ᾔδειτε⸃.
20He spoke these words in the treasury while teaching in the temple, and no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
ταῦτα τὰ ῥήματα ⸀ἐλάλησεν ἐν τῷ γαζοφυλακίῳ διδάσκων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ· καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπίασεν αὐτόν, ὅτι οὔπω ἐληλύθει ἡ ὥρα αὐτοῦ.
21Again he said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come."
Εἶπεν οὖν πάλιν ⸀αὐτοῖς· Ἐγὼ ὑπάγω καὶ ζητήσετέ με, καὶ ἐν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ὑμῶν ἀποθανεῖσθε· ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν.
22So the Jews said, "Is he going to kill himself? Is that why he says, 'Where I am going, you cannot come'?"
ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· Μήτι ἀποκτενεῖ ἑαυτὸν ὅτι λέγει· Ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν;
23He said to them, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
καὶ ⸀ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· Ὑμεῖς ἐκ τῶν κάτω ἐστέ, ἐγὼ ἐκ τῶν ἄνω εἰμί· ὑμεῖς ἐκ ⸂τούτου τοῦ κόσμου⸃ ἐστέ, ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου.
24That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."
εἶπον οὖν ὑμῖν ὅτι ἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν· ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ πιστεύσητε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι, ἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν.
25So they asked him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been telling you from the beginning.
ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ· Σὺ τίς εἶ; ⸀εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Τὴν ἀρχὴν ⸂ὅ τι⸃ καὶ λαλῶ ὑμῖν;
26I have much to say about you, and to judge, but the one who sent me is true, and what I have heard from him I declare to the world."
πολλὰ ἔχω περὶ ὑμῶν λαλεῖν καὶ κρίνειν· ἀλλʼ ὁ πέμψας με ἀληθής ἐστιν, κἀγὼ ἃ ἤκουσα παρʼ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα ⸀λαλῶ εἰς τὸν κόσμον.
27They did not understand that he was speaking to them about the Father.
οὐκ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῖς ἔλεγεν.
28So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own, but speak only what the Father has taught me.
εἶπεν ⸀οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ὅταν ὑψώσητε τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, τότε γνώσεσθε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι, καὶ ἀπʼ ἐμαυτοῦ ποιῶ οὐδέν, ἀλλὰ καθὼς ἐδίδαξέν με ὁ ⸀πατὴρ ταῦτα λαλῶ.
29And the one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him."
καὶ ὁ πέμψας με μετʼ ἐμοῦ ἐστιν· οὐκ ἀφῆκέν με ⸀μόνον, ὅτι ἐγὼ τὰ ἀρεστὰ αὐτῷ ποιῶ πάντοτε.
30As he was saying these things, many believed in him.
ταῦτα αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν.
31So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, "If you remain in my word, you are truly my disciples,
Ἔλεγεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς πεπιστευκότας αὐτῷ Ἰουδαίους· Ἐὰν ὑμεῖς μείνητε ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τῷ ἐμῷ, ἀληθῶς μαθηταί μού ἐστε,
32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
καὶ γνώσεσθε τὴν ἀλήθειαν, καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια ἐλευθερώσει ὑμᾶς.
33They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and we have never been anyone's slaves. How can you say, 'You will become free'?"
ἀπεκρίθησαν ⸂πρὸς αὐτόν⸃· Σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐσμεν καὶ οὐδενὶ δεδουλεύκαμεν πώποτε· πῶς σὺ λέγεις ὅτι Ἐλεύθεροι γενήσεσθε;
34Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I tell you: everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν δοῦλός ἐστιν τῆς ἁμαρτίας·
35A slave does not remain in the household forever; a son remains forever.
ὁ δὲ δοῦλος οὐ μένει ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα· ⸀ὁ υἱὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
ἐὰν οὖν ὁ υἱὸς ὑμᾶς ἐλευθερώσῃ, ὄντως ἐλεύθεροι ἔσεσθε.
37I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are trying to kill me, because my word finds no room in you.
οἶδα ὅτι σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐστε· ἀλλὰ ζητεῖτέ με ἀποκτεῖναι, ὅτι ὁ λόγος ὁ ἐμὸς οὐ χωρεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν.
38I speak of what I have seen with my Father; you do what you have heard from your father."
⸂ἃ ἐγὼ⸃ ἑώρακα παρὰ τῷ ⸀πατρὶ λαλῶ· καὶ ὑμεῖς οὖν ⸂ἃ ἠκούσατε⸃ παρὰ ⸂τοῦ πατρὸς⸃ ποιεῖτε.
39"Our father is Abraham," they answered. Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of Abraham.
Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν Ἀβραάμ ἐστιν. λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Εἰ τέκνα τοῦ Ἀβραάμ ⸀ἐστε, τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ ⸀ἐποιεῖτε·
40But as it is, you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did nothing like that.
νῦν δὲ ζητεῖτέ με ἀποκτεῖναι, ἄνθρωπον ὃς τὴν ἀλήθειαν ὑμῖν λελάληκα ἣν ἤκουσα παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ· τοῦτο Ἀβραὰμ οὐκ ἐποίησεν.
41You are doing the works of your own father." They said to him, "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father: God."
ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε τὰ ἔργα τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν. ⸀εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Ἡμεῖς ἐκ πορνείας ⸂οὐ γεγεννήμεθα⸃· ἕνα πατέρα ἔχομεν τὸν θεόν.
42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and am here. I have not come on my own; he sent me.
⸀εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Εἰ ὁ θεὸς πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἦν ἠγαπᾶτε ἂν ἐμέ, ἐγὼ γὰρ ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐξῆλθον καὶ ἥκω· οὐδὲ γὰρ ἀπʼ ἐμαυτοῦ ἐλήλυθα, ἀλλʼ ἐκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν.
43Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot bear to hear my word.
διὰ τί τὴν λαλιὰν τὴν ἐμὴν οὐ γινώσκετε; ὅτι οὐ δύνασθε ἀκούειν τὸν λόγον τὸν ἐμόν.
44You are of your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he has never stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
ὑμεῖς ἐκ τοῦ πατρὸς τοῦ διαβόλου ἐστὲ καὶ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν θέλετε ποιεῖν. ἐκεῖνος ἀνθρωποκτόνος ἦν ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς, καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ ⸂οὐκ ἔστηκεν⸃, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἀλήθεια ἐν αὐτῷ. ὅταν λαλῇ τὸ ψεῦδος, ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων λαλεῖ, ὅτι ψεύστης ἐστὶν καὶ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ.
45But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.
ἐγὼ δὲ ὅτι τὴν ἀλήθειαν λέγω, οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι.
46Which of you can convict me of sin? If I am telling the truth, why do you not believe me?
τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐλέγχει με περὶ ἁμαρτίας; ⸀εἰ ἀλήθειαν λέγω, διὰ τί ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι;
47Whoever is from God listens to the words of God. This is why you do not listen: you are not from God."
ὁ ὢν ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ θεοῦ ἀκούει· διὰ τοῦτο ὑμεῖς οὐκ ἀκούετε ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ οὐκ ἐστέ.
48The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?"
⸀Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Οὐ καλῶς λέγομεν ἡμεῖς ὅτι Σαμαρίτης εἶ σὺ καὶ δαιμόνιον ἔχεις;
49Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon. I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.
ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Ἐγὼ δαιμόνιον οὐκ ἔχω, ἀλλὰ τιμῶ τὸν πατέρα μου, καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀτιμάζετέ με.
50I am not seeking glory for myself. There is one who seeks it, and he is the judge.
ἐγὼ δὲ οὐ ζητῶ τὴν δόξαν μου· ἔστιν ὁ ζητῶν καὶ κρίνων.
51Truly, truly, I tell you: whoever keeps my word will never see death."
ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐάν τις τὸν ⸂ἐμὸν λόγον⸃ τηρήσῃ, θάνατον οὐ μὴ θεωρήσῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
52The Jews said to him, "Now we know you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever keeps your word will never taste death.
⸀εἶπον αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· Νῦν ἐγνώκαμεν ὅτι δαιμόνιον ἔχεις. Ἀβραὰμ ἀπέθανεν καὶ οἱ προφῆται, καὶ σὺ λέγεις· Ἐάν τις τὸν λόγον μου τηρήσῃ, οὐ μὴ γεύσηται θανάτου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα·
53Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too. Who do you make yourself out to be?"
μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἀβραάμ, ὅστις ἀπέθανεν; καὶ οἱ προφῆται ἀπέθανον· τίνα ⸀σεαυτὸν ποιεῖς;
54Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, the one of whom you say, 'He is our God'—
ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Ἐὰν ἐγὼ ⸀δοξάσω ἐμαυτόν, ἡ δόξα μου οὐδέν ἐστιν· ἔστιν ὁ πατήρ μου ὁ δοξάζων με, ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι θεὸς ⸀ἡμῶν ἐστιν,
55and you have not known him, but I know him. If I said I did not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I keep his word.
καὶ οὐκ ἐγνώκατε αὐτόν, ἐγὼ δὲ οἶδα αὐτόν· κἂν εἴπω ὅτι οὐκ οἶδα αὐτόν, ἔσομαι ὅμοιος ⸀ὑμῖν ψεύστης· ἀλλὰ οἶδα αὐτὸν καὶ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ τηρῶ.
56Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day; he saw it and was glad."
Ἀβραὰμ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἠγαλλιάσατο ἵνα ἴδῃ τὴν ἡμέραν τὴν ἐμήν, καὶ εἶδεν καὶ ἐχάρη.
57So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and you have seen Abraham?"
εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς αὐτόν· Πεντήκοντα ἔτη οὔπω ἔχεις καὶ Ἀβραὰμ ἑώρακας;
58Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I tell you: before Abraham was, I am."
εἶπεν ⸀αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς· Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγὼ εἰμί.
59At that they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and slipped out of the temple.
ἦραν οὖν λίθους ἵνα βάλωσιν ἐπʼ αὐτόν· Ἰησοῦς δὲ ἐκρύβη καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τοῦ ⸀ἱεροῦ.
