Jeremiah Imprisoned by the Leaders
When the Chaldean army withdrew from Jerusalem, Jeremiah went out to travel to the land of Benjamin to receive his share among the people. At the Benjamin Gate he was seized by the guard commander Irijah, who accused him of defecting to the Chaldeans. Jeremiah denied the accusation, but Irijah brought him before the leaders, who beat him and threw him into prison in the house of the scribe Jonathan, where he remained for many days. 11When the Chaldean army had withdrawn from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army,
וְהָיָ֗ה בְּהֵֽעָלוֹת֙ חֵ֣יל הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים מֵעַ֖ל יְרֽוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם מִפְּנֵ֖י חֵ֥יל פַּרְעֹֽה׃ ס
12Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin, to take possession of his share of property there among the people.
וַיֵּצֵ֤א יִרְמְיָ֙הוּ֙ מִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם לָלֶ֖כֶת אֶ֣רֶץ בִּנְיָמִ֑ן לַחֲלִ֥ק מִשָּׁ֖ם בְּת֥וֹךְ הָעָֽם׃
13But when he reached the Benjamin Gate, an officer of the guard was on duty there, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, and he seized Jeremiah the prophet and said, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!"
וַיְהִי־ה֞וּא בְּשַׁ֣עַר בִּנְיָמִ֗ן וְשָׁם֙ בַּ֣עַל פְּקִדֻ֔ת וּשְׁמוֹ֙ יִרְאִיָּ֔יה בֶּן־שֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֖ה בֶּן־חֲנַנְיָ֑ה וַיִּתְפֹּ֞שׂ אֶֽת־יִרְמְיָ֤הוּ הַנָּבִיא֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אֶל־הַכַּשְׂדִּ֖ים אַתָּ֥ה נֹפֵֽל׃
14"That's a lie," Jeremiah said. "I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." But Irijah would not listen to him; he arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יִרְמְיָ֜הוּ שֶׁ֗קֶר אֵינֶ֤נִּי נֹפֵל֙ עַל־הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖ע אֵלָ֑יו וַיִּתְפֹּ֤שׂ יִרְאִיָּיה֙ בְּיִרְמְיָ֔הוּ וַיְבִאֵ֖הוּ אֶל־הַשָּׂרִֽים׃
15The officials were enraged at Jeremiah. They had him beaten and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.
וַיִּקְצְפ֧וּ הַשָּׂרִ֛ים עַֽל־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ וְהִכּ֣וּ אֹת֑וֹ וְנָתְנ֨וּ אוֹת֜וֹ בֵּ֣ית הָאֵס֗וּר בֵּ֚ית יְהוֹנָתָ֣ן הַסֹּפֵ֔ר כִּֽי־אֹת֥וֹ עָשׂ֖וּ לְבֵ֥ית הַכֶּֽלֶא׃
16So Jeremiah was put into the dungeon, into the vaulted cells, and there he remained many days.
כִּ֣י בָ֧א יִרְמְיָ֛הוּ אֶל־בֵּ֥ית הַבּ֖וֹר וְאֶל־הַֽחֲנֻ֑יוֹת וַיֵּֽשֶׁב־שָׁ֥ם יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ יָמִ֥ים רַבִּֽים׃ פ
