Jesus' Teaching in the Temple at the Feast of Tabernacles
In the middle of the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus goes up to the temple and begins to teach. The Jews are amazed at his teaching, and Jesus explains that his teaching is from the one who sent him. He confronts them with their attempt to kill him, and defends his healing on the Sabbath by pointing to circumcision. On the last great day of the feast, he cries out the promise of living water to anyone who thirsts – a word about the Spirit. The crowd is divided: some believe he is the prophet or the Messiah, while others reject him because he is from Galilee. The chief priests and Pharisees send guards to arrest him, but the guards return empty-handed, captivated by his speech. Nicodemus speaks up on his behalf, reminding them that the law requires hearing a man before judging him.
Juan 7,14-52
14When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up to the temple and began to teach.
Ἤδη δὲ τῆς ἑορτῆς μεσούσης ⸀ἀνέβη Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ ἐδίδασκεν.
15The Jews were astonished. "How does this man have such learning," they said, "when he has never been trained?"
⸂ἐθαύμαζον οὖν⸃ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες· Πῶς οὗτος γράμματα οἶδεν μὴ μεμαθηκώς;
16Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not my own; it comes from him who sent me.
ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτοῖς ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν· Ἡ ἐμὴ διδαχὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὴ ἀλλὰ τοῦ πέμψαντός με·
17Anyone who is willing to do God's will shall know whether this teaching comes from God or whether I am speaking on my own.
ἐάν τις θέλῃ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιεῖν, γνώσεται περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς πότερον ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐστιν ἢ ἐγὼ ἀπʼ ἐμαυτοῦ λαλῶ.
18Whoever speaks on his own is seeking his own glory. But the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is truthful, and there is nothing dishonest in him.
ὁ ἀφʼ ἑαυτοῦ λαλῶν τὴν δόξαν τὴν ἰδίαν ζητεῖ· ὁ δὲ ζητῶν τὴν δόξαν τοῦ πέμψαντος αὐτὸν οὗτος ἀληθής ἐστιν καὶ ἀδικία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν.
19Didn't Moses give you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"
Οὐ Μωϋσῆς ⸀δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὸν νόμον; καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ποιεῖ τὸν νόμον. τί με ζητεῖτε ἀποκτεῖναι;
20The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?"
ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ⸀ὄχλος· Δαιμόνιον ἔχεις· τίς σε ζητεῖ ἀποκτεῖναι;
21Jesus answered them, "I did one work, and you are all astounded.
ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Ἓν ἔργον ἐποίησα καὶ πάντες θαυμάζετε.
22Moses gave you circumcision—though it did not come from Moses but from the patriarchs—and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
διὰ τοῦτο Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὴν περιτομήν— οὐχ ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐστὶν ἀλλʼ ἐκ τῶν πατέρων— καὶ ἐν σαββάτῳ περιτέμνετε ἄνθρωπον.
23If a man is circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you furious with me for making a man's whole body well on the Sabbath?
εἰ περιτομὴν ⸀λαμβάνει ἄνθρωπος ἐν σαββάτῳ ἵνα μὴ λυθῇ ὁ νόμος Μωϋσέως, ἐμοὶ χολᾶτε ὅτι ὅλον ἄνθρωπον ὑγιῆ ἐποίησα ἐν σαββάτῳ;
24Stop judging by appearances; judge with a right judgment."
μὴ κρίνετε κατʼ ὄψιν, ἀλλὰ τὴν δικαίαν κρίσιν ⸀κρίνετε.
25Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, "Isn't this the man they want to kill?
Ἔλεγον οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν Ἱεροσολυμιτῶν· Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι;
26Yet here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the authorities have actually concluded that he is the Christ?
καὶ ἴδε παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσιν· μήποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ⸀ἐστιν ὁ χριστός;
27But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from."
ἀλλὰ τοῦτον οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν· ὁ δὲ χριστὸς ὅταν ἔρχηται οὐδεὶς γινώσκει πόθεν ἐστίν.
28Then Jesus, teaching in the temple, cried out, "Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on my own. The one who sent me is true, and him you do not know.
ἔκραξεν οὖν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ λέγων· Κἀμὲ οἴδατε καὶ οἴδατε πόθεν εἰμί· καὶ ἀπʼ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλήλυθα, ἀλλʼ ἔστιν ἀληθινὸς ὁ πέμψας με, ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε·
29I know him, because I come from him, and he sent me."
ἐγὼ οἶδα αὐτόν, ὅτι παρʼ αὐτοῦ εἰμι κἀκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν.
30At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
ἐζήτουν οὖν αὐτὸν πιάσαι, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπʼ αὐτὸν τὴν χεῖρα, ὅτι οὔπω ἐληλύθει ἡ ὥρα αὐτοῦ.
31Still, many in the crowd believed in him and said, "When the Christ comes, will he perform more signs than this man has done?"
⸂ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου δὲ πολλοὶ⸃ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν, καὶ ⸀ἔλεγον· Ὁ χριστὸς ὅταν ἔλθῃ ⸀μὴ πλείονα ⸀σημεῖα ποιήσει ὧν οὗτος ἐποίησεν;
32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent guards to arrest him.
Ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι τοῦ ὄχλου γογγύζοντος περὶ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα, καὶ ἀπέστειλαν ⸂οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὑπηρέτας⸃ ἵνα πιάσωσιν αὐτόν.
33So Jesus said, "I am with you only a little while longer, and then I go to him who sent me.
εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἔτι ⸂χρόνον μικρὸν⸃ μεθʼ ὑμῶν εἰμι καὶ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με.
34You will look for me and will not find me, and where I am you cannot come."
ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ ⸀εὑρήσετε, καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν.
35The Jews said to one another, "Where does he intend to go, that we won't find him? Is he going to the Jews scattered among the Greeks, to teach the Greeks?
εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς· Ποῦ οὗτος μέλλει πορεύεσθαι ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν; μὴ εἰς τὴν διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας;
36What does he mean by saying, 'You will look for me and will not find me, and where I am you cannot come'?"
τίς ἐστιν ⸂ὁ λόγος οὗτος⸃ ὃν εἶπε· Ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ ⸀εὑρήσετε, καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν;
37On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.
Ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ μεγάλῃ τῆς ἑορτῆς εἱστήκει ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἔκραξεν λέγων· Ἐάν τις διψᾷ ἐρχέσθω πρός με καὶ πινέτω.
38Whoever believes in me—as the Scripture has said—out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water."
ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ, καθὼς εἶπεν ἡ γραφή, ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος.
39He said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive; for the Spirit had not yet been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
τοῦτο δὲ εἶπεν περὶ τοῦ πνεύματος ⸀οὗ ἔμελλον λαμβάνειν οἱ ⸀πιστεύσαντες εἰς αὐτόν· οὔπω γὰρ ἦν ⸀πνεῦμα, ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ⸀οὐδέπω ἐδοξάσθη.
40When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, "This really is the Prophet."
⸂Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου οὖν⸃ ἀκούσαντες ⸂τῶν λόγων τούτων⸃ ⸀ἔλεγον· Οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ προφήτης·
41Others said, "He is the Christ." But others said, "Surely the Christ does not come from Galilee?
ἄλλοι ἔλεγον· Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστός· ⸂οἱ δὲ⸃ ἔλεγον· Μὴ γὰρ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁ χριστὸς ἔρχεται;
42Doesn't Scripture say that the Christ comes from David's line, from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"
⸀οὐχ ἡ γραφὴ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαυίδ, καὶ ἀπὸ Βηθλέεμ τῆς κώμης ὅπου ἦν Δαυίδ, ⸂ἔρχεται ὁ χριστός⸃;
43So the crowd was divided over him.
σχίσμα οὖν ⸂ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ⸃ διʼ αὐτόν.
44Some of them wanted to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.
τινὲς δὲ ἤθελον ἐξ αὐτῶν πιάσαι αὐτόν, ἀλλʼ οὐδεὶς ⸀ἐπέβαλεν ἐπʼ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας.
45When the guards returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, they were asked, "Why haven't you brought him in?"
Ἦλθον οὖν οἱ ὑπηρέται πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ Φαρισαίους, καὶ εἶπον αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖνοι· Διὰ τί οὐκ ἠγάγετε αὐτόν;
46The guards answered, "No one has ever spoken like this man."
ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ὑπηρέται· Οὐδέποτε ⸂ἐλάλησεν οὕτως⸃ ⸀ἄνθρωπος.
47"You haven't been deceived too, have you?" the Pharisees replied.
ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν αὐτοῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι· Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς πεπλάνησθε;
48"Has a single one of the rulers believed in him, or any of the Pharisees?
μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτὸν ἢ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων;
49But this crowd, which knows nothing of the law—they are under a curse."
ἀλλὰ ὁ ὄχλος οὗτος ὁ μὴ γινώσκων τὸν νόμον ⸀ἐπάρατοί εἰσιν.
50Nicodemus, who had gone to him earlier and was one of their own, said to them,
λέγει Νικόδημος πρὸς αὐτούς, ὁ ⸀ἐλθὼν πρὸς αὐτὸν ⸀πρότερον, εἷς ὢν ἐξ αὐτῶν·
51"Does our law judge a man without first hearing from him and learning what he is doing?"
Μὴ ὁ νόμος ἡμῶν κρίνει τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ ⸂πρῶτον παρʼ αὐτοῦ⸃ καὶ γνῷ τί ποιεῖ;
52They answered him, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and see: no prophet arises from Galilee."
ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶ; ἐραύνησον καὶ ἴδε ὅτι ⸂ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας προφήτης⸃ οὐκ ⸀ἐγείρεται.
