Jesus and Divorce
The Pharisees test Jesus with a question about divorce, and he answers by referring to creation, emphasizing that marriage is a divine union that should not be separated. Later, he explains to the disciples that whoever divorces and marries another commits adultery.
Marcos 10,1-12
1Then he left that place and went into the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan. Crowds gathered around him again, and again, as was his custom, he taught them.
Καὶ ἐκεῖθεν ἀναστὰς ἔρχεται εἰς τὰ ὅρια τῆς Ἰουδαίας ⸀καὶ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, καὶ συμπορεύονται πάλιν ὄχλοι πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ ὡς εἰώθει πάλιν ἐδίδασκεν αὐτούς.
2Some Pharisees came up and, to test him, asked whether it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife.[^1]

⸀Καὶ ⸀ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν εἰ ἔξεστιν ἀνδρὶ γυναῖκα ἀπολῦσαι, πειράζοντες αὐτόν.
3He answered them, "What did Moses command you?"
ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Τί ὑμῖν ἐνετείλατο Μωϋσῆς;
4They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."
οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· ⸂Ἐπέτρεψεν Μωϋσῆς⸃ βιβλίον ἀποστασίου γράψαι καὶ ἀπολῦσαι.
5Jesus said to them, "He wrote you that commandment because of your hardness of heart.
⸂ὁ δὲ⸃ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Πρὸς τὴν σκληροκαρδίαν ὑμῶν ἔγραψεν ὑμῖν τὴν ἐντολὴν ταύτην·
6But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female.'
ἀπὸ δὲ ἀρχῆς κτίσεως ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ ἐποίησεν ⸀αὐτούς·
7'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
ἕνεκεν τούτου καταλείψει ἄνθρωπος τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν μητέρα ⸂καὶ προσκολληθήσεται πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ⸃,
8and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
καὶ ἔσονται οἱ δύο εἰς σάρκα μίαν· ὥστε οὐκέτι εἰσὶν δύο ἀλλὰ μία σάρξ·
9Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."
ὃ οὖν ὁ θεὸς συνέζευξεν ἄνθρωπος μὴ χωριζέτω.
10Back in the house, the disciples asked him about this again.
Καὶ ⸂εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν⸃ πάλιν οἱ μαθηταὶ ⸂περὶ τούτου⸃ ⸀ἐπηρώτων αὐτόν.
11He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her,
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Ὃς ⸀ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ καὶ γαμήσῃ ἄλλην μοιχᾶται ἐπʼ αὐτήν,
12and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."
καὶ ἐὰν ⸂αὐτὴ ἀπολύσασα τὸν ἄνδρα αὐτῆς γαμήσῃ ἄλλον⸃ μοιχᾶται.
