John the Baptist prepares the way
John the Baptist appears in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People from all over Judea and Jerusalem come to him, confess their sins, and are baptized in the Jordan River. Dressed in a garment of camel hair with a leather belt, and eating locusts and wild honey, he proclaims that one more powerful is coming after him, someone he is not worthy to untie the sandals of. He baptizes with water, but the one who comes will baptize with the Holy Spirit.

4John appeared in the wilderness, baptizing and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
ἐγένετο Ἰωάννης ⸀ὁ βαπτίζων ἐν τῇ ⸀ἐρήμῳ κηρύσσων βάπτισμα μετανοίας εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν.
5The whole Judean countryside went out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
καὶ ἐξεπορεύετο πρὸς αὐτὸν πᾶσα ἡ Ἰουδαία χώρα καὶ οἱ Ἱεροσολυμῖται ⸂πάντες, καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο⸃ ⸂ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ποταμῷ⸃ ἐξομολογούμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν.
6John was clothed in camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
⸂καὶ ἦν⸃ ὁ Ἰωάννης ἐνδεδυμένος τρίχας καμήλου καὶ ζώνην δερματίνην περὶ τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔσθων ἀκρίδας καὶ μέλι ἄγριον.
7And he proclaimed: "After me comes one mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
καὶ ἐκήρυσσεν λέγων· Ἔρχεται ὁ ἰσχυρότερός μου ὀπίσω μου, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς κύψας λῦσαι τὸν ἱμάντα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτοῦ·
8I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
⸀ἐγὼ ἐβάπτισα ⸀ὑμᾶς ὕδατι, αὐτὸς δὲ βαπτίσει ὑμᾶς ⸀ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ.
