John the Baptist sends a message and Jesus answers
John the Baptist sends disciples from prison to ask if Jesus is the one who was to come, and Jesus answers by pointing to his miracles: the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. Then Jesus praises John as more than a prophet and the greatest born of women, but emphasizes that the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater, and identifies John as the Elijah who was to come.
Mateo 11,2-15
2Now John, in prison, heard about the works of the Christ, and he sent word through his disciples
Ὁ δὲ Ἰωάννης ἀκούσας ἐν τῷ δεσμωτηρίῳ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ χριστοῦ πέμψας ⸀διὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ
3to ask him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?"
εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Σὺ εἶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἢ ἕτερον προσδοκῶμεν;
4Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see:
καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Πορευθέντες ἀπαγγείλατε Ἰωάννῃ ἃ ἀκούετε καὶ βλέπετε·
5the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news preached to them.
τυφλοὶ ἀναβλέπουσιν καὶ χωλοὶ περιπατοῦσιν, λεπροὶ καθαρίζονται καὶ κωφοὶ ἀκούουσιν, ⸀καὶ νεκροὶ ἐγείρονται καὶ πτωχοὶ εὐαγγελίζονται·
6And blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of me."
καὶ μακάριός ἐστιν ὃς ⸀ἐὰν μὴ σκανδαλισθῇ ἐν ἐμοί.
7As they were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
Τούτων δὲ πορευομένων ἤρξατο ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγειν τοῖς ὄχλοις περὶ Ἰωάννου· Τί ἐξήλθατε εἰς τὴν ἔρημον θεάσασθαι; κάλαμον ὑπὸ ἀνέμου σαλευόμενον;
8What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces.
ἀλλὰ τί ἐξήλθατε ἰδεῖν; ἄνθρωπον ἐν ⸀μαλακοῖς ἠμφιεσμένον; ἰδοὺ οἱ τὰ μαλακὰ φοροῦντες ἐν τοῖς οἴκοις τῶν ⸀βασιλέων ⸀εἰσίν.
9So what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
ἀλλὰ τί ἐξήλθατε⸂; προφήτην ἰδεῖν⸃; ναί, λέγω ὑμῖν, καὶ περισσότερον προφήτου.
10This is the one about whom it is written: 'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'
⸀οὗτός ἐστιν περὶ οὗ γέγραπται· Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω τὸν ἄγγελόν μου πρὸ προσώπου σου, ὃς κατασκευάσει τὴν ὁδόν σου ἔμπροσθέν σου.
11Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has arisen; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, οὐκ ἐγήγερται ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν μείζων Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ· ὁ δὲ μικρότερος ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν μείζων αὐτοῦ ἐστιν.
12From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has been under assault, and violent people seize it.
ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν ἡμερῶν Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ ἕως ἄρτι ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν βιάζεται, καὶ βιασταὶ ἁρπάζουσιν αὐτήν.
13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John,
πάντες γὰρ οἱ προφῆται καὶ ὁ νόμος ἕως Ἰωάννου ἐπροφήτευσαν·
14and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who was to come.
καὶ εἰ θέλετε δέξασθαι, αὐτός ἐστιν Ἠλίας ὁ μέλλων ἔρχεσθαι.
15Whoever has ears, let them hear.
ὁ ἔχων ⸀ὦτα ἀκουέτω.
