The Jews Flee to Egypt

After the prophet Jeremiah has warned against fleeing to Egypt, Azariah, Johanan and the proud men accuse him of speaking lies and charge Baruch with inciting them against them. They do not obey the Lord's voice, but take with them the whole remnant of Judah – including Jeremiah and Baruch – and go to Tahpanhes in Egypt. There the Lord gives Jeremiah a sign: he is to bury large stones at the entrance to Pharaoh's house, for Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, will come and set his throne over them, strike Egypt, burn the temples of the gods and break the pillars in Heliopolis Jeremiah 43:1-13.

Jeremías 43,1-13

1When Jeremiah had finished telling all the people every word of the LORD their God—everything the LORD their God had sent him to tell them, all these words—
2Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, "You are lying! The LORD our God did not send you to say, 'Do not go to Egypt to settle there.'
3It is Baruch son of Neriah who is inciting you against us, to hand us over to the Chaldeans, so they may kill us or carry us into exile in Babylon."
4So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people refused to obey the voice of the LORD, which told them to stay in the land of Judah.
5Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took the whole remnant of Judah—those who had come back from all the nations where they had been scattered, to live in the land of Judah:
6the men, the women, the children, the king's daughters, and every person whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, along with Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah.
7They went to the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the LORD, and they came as far as Tahpanhes.
8Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes:
9"Take some large stones in your hand and bury them in the mortar of the brick pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh's palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah.
10Then say to them: This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am going to send for my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will set his throne over these stones I have buried, and he will spread his royal canopy above them.
11He will come and strike the land of Egypt: those destined for death, to death; those for captivity, to captivity; those for the sword, to the sword.
12I will set fire to the temples of Egypt's gods; he will burn them and carry the idols off captive. He will wrap up the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps up his cloak, and he will depart from there unharmed.
13He will shatter the sacred pillars of Heliopolis, the city of the sun, in the land of Egypt, and he will burn down the temples of Egypt's gods."
