Micah's Lament over the Cities of Judah
The prophet Micah laments and mourns over the cities of Judah that are struck by God's judgment. He mentions Gath, Beth-leaphrah, Shaphir, Saanannim, Beth-ezel, Maroth, Lachish, Moresheth-gath, Achzib, Mareshah, and Adullam, and calls for mourning, flight, and shaving the head because of the children who are taken into captivity.
Miqueas 1,8-16
8For this I will lament and wail; I will go stripped and naked. I will howl like the jackals and mourn like the ostriches.
עַל־זֹאת֙ אֶסְפְּדָ֣ה וְאֵילִ֔ילָה אֵילְכָ֥ה *שילל **שׁוֹלָ֖ל וְעָר֑וֹם אֶעֱשֶׂ֤ה מִסְפֵּד֙ כַּתַּנִּ֔ים וְאֵ֖בֶל כִּבְנ֥וֹת יַעֲנָֽה׃
9For her wounds are incurable; the blow has come to Judah, reaching the gate of my people, all the way to Jerusalem.
כִּ֥י אֲנוּשָׁ֖ה מַכּוֹתֶ֑יהָ כִּי־בָ֙אָה֙ עַד־יְהוּדָ֔ה נָגַ֛ע עַד־שַׁ֥עַר עַמִּ֖י עַד־יְרוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃
10Tell it not in Gath; do not weep at all. In Beth-leaphrah, house of dust, roll yourself in the dust.
בְּגַת֙ אַל־תַּגִּ֔ידוּ בָּכ֖וֹ אַל־תִּבְכּ֑וּ בְּבֵ֣ית לְעַפְרָ֔ה עָפָ֖ר *התפלשתי **הִתְפַּלָּֽשִׁי׃
11Pass on your way, you who live in Shaphir, in naked shame. Those who live in Zaanan do not come out. Beth-ezel is in mourning; its support is taken from you.
עִבְרִ֥י לָכֶ֛ם יוֹשֶׁ֥בֶת שָׁפִ֖יר עֶרְיָה־בֹ֑שֶׁת לֹ֤א יָֽצְאָה֙ יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת צַֽאֲנָ֔ן מִסְפַּד֙ בֵּ֣ית הָאֵ֔צֶל יִקַּ֥ח מִכֶּ֖ם עֶמְדָּתֽוֹ׃
12The people of Maroth writhe in hope of good, for disaster has come down from the LORD to the gate of Jerusalem.
כִּֽי־חָ֥לָֽה לְט֖וֹב יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת מָר֑וֹת כִּֽי־יָ֤רַד רָע֙ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה לְשַׁ֖עַר יְרוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃
13Harness the horses to the chariot, you who live in Lachish. You were the beginning of sin for Daughter Zion, for in you the transgressions of Israel were found.
רְתֹ֧ם הַמֶּרְכָּבָ֛ה לָרֶ֖כֶשׁ יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת לָכִ֑ישׁ רֵאשִׁ֨ית חַטָּ֥את הִיא֙ לְבַת־צִיּ֔וֹן כִּי־בָ֥ךְ נִמְצְא֖וּ פִּשְׁעֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
14Therefore you shall give parting gifts to Moresheth-gath. The houses of Achzib will prove a deception to the kings of Israel.
לָכֵן֙ תִּתְּנִ֣י שִׁלּוּחִ֔ים עַ֖ל מוֹרֶ֣שֶׁת גַּ֑ת בָּתֵּ֤י אַכְזִיב֙ לְאַכְזָ֔ב לְמַלְכֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
15I will yet bring a conqueror against you, you who live in Mareshah. The glory of Israel will come as far as Adullam.
עֹ֗ד הַיֹּרֵשׁ֙ אָ֣בִי לָ֔ךְ יוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת מָֽרֵשָׁ֑ה עַד־עֲדֻּלָּ֥ם יָב֖וֹא כְּב֥וֹד יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
16Shave your head and cut off your hair for the children who were your delight; make yourself as bald as the vulture, for they have gone from you into exile.
קָרְחִ֣י וָגֹ֔זִּי עַל־בְּנֵ֖י תַּעֲנוּגָ֑יִךְ הַרְחִ֤בִי קָרְחָתֵךְ֙ כַּנֶּ֔שֶׁר כִּ֥י גָל֖וּ מִמֵּֽךְ׃ ס
